I got your pacing and maturity right here.

I think this is exactly the sort of thing that more people should be doing. and I bet the Melvins are jealous right now.

Actually, it isn't that far off from Sunn O))). It's the same kind of idea that is considered artsy by some, yet wankery by most.

this is just supid. i'm not saying it's not art, as that's such a subjective thing, but god damn that's a stupid project.

C'mmon SOK...

10 mins VS. 300 years...

Sunn O))) create a ambience in which you can be engaged and which you can follow for an hour or so, so it has a point, but this?

I studied the composer for a while in college but don't know much about him. Anyway, really he has no interest in making music to listen to, it's all about the next big "artistic statement". He's the dude that "composed" 4 minutes of silence!

it says that on the page :/

but this 639-year thing isn't his idea, it's the project. it was supposed to last 20 minutes.

Deathkvlt, you obviously fail to get the point. How can 300 years not engage you?

Is the sheer notion of a musical performance going on long after you and your children and grandchildren have died, not intriguing? If you plan of going there every time a new element is added, even the slightest shift with months inbetween, the prospect will continue to exist in the back of your mind. And that, darling, is engaging.

Of course, it's just a stupid rip-off of Bill Viola's (not sure if it's him or another video artist, though) 24 Hours Psycho, in which Alfred Hitchcock's film is stretched out to 24 hours.

As a sidenote, thank John Cage, together with Nam Jun Paik, for creating Noise. Or rather: destroy the two of them.

I think that at the end of the day music as an art (not all music is art) is meant for being heard and enjoyed (even by a few that "get" what's going on) as well as to evoke certain feelings/emotions on the listener, but all his pretentious crap miss the point entirely. I think it's gay... I mean, 4 mins of silence, that's pretentious crap, and the fact that he's building a name based on such peretentiousness is even worse.

Well yeah, the interesting thing is that Cage is about the most influential figure in modern classical music- strange culture that it is. Haha, I don't like the guy at all, really. It was kinda interesting to study in an academic context though... Even if his work is pretty stupid.

It's an interesting concept, but I wouldn't consider it engaging, I mean, if I'm not able to be there when the new element is added I would't enjoy it. I mean, Sunn O))) works for me because I am there listening to the music (and even maybe in a trance-like state) during the whole of it's performance.

For example... I trust you know the song Sargeist by the band with the same name. You start listening to the song and in the one minute mark you go away for a while and leave the song running. Then you come back halfway through that killer riff that starts around the 1:38 mark. You would have missed all the build up which adds power to the riff and builds atmosphere, not to mention half of the riff per se. Even if you know the riff and can imagine it perfectly the effect isn't close to the same.

Well, I guess the same happens here, if you do periodic visits to the place where this "piece" is playing, then you will loose atmosphere and even the music execution, even if it's running in teh back of your brain (plus a single chord played for a complete year has nothing exciting IMO). Music that can't be heard, can't be enjoyed.

It's an interesting concept, yes, but it fails.

Not flaming, just discusing OK man.

I think it's a pretty fitting way to celebrate a rather odd composer's life.. many people who have contributed far less to anything I find interesting would die to be remembered for at least 637 more years.

By the time it's done every computer in the world should be capable of holding that amount.

Truthfully, I can't see it being of interest in 600-odd years. If any churches are left standing by then, that is, Varg's due out looong before then.
