Post subject: White/Rob Zombie: Some Of The Baddest Music Ever!
PostPosted: Tue Dec 06, 2005 1:41 am
I posted this on another board, so it may sound a bit off because it was in response to something else, but I don't want to edit it all! :D

What are your thoughts? Rob Zombie is truly a one-of-a-kind artist! White/Rob Zombie has put on some of the baddest shows I've ever seen. The lyrics are awesome, even though they make little to no sense to most people, they're still extremely interesting. Rob's artwork and set design is sick, and his directing and writing ability is clearly excellent.

But...he's not a musician, so where does that leave him? White Zombie flat out sucked until their God Of Thunder EP. That is when J. Yuenger joined the band. Prior to that they were a noisy, out of tune, post-punk artcore band. Rob's vocals were whiny and annoying, even high-pitched. They progressed a bit on Make Them Die Slowly, but it wasn't until J. joined the band that they got that fat, heavy sound and Rob actually sang with some balls.

Then they blew up with La Sexorcisto and Astro-Creep. You'll notice that Rob's solo stuff is very similar, but musically it's all power-chords whereas J. had a lot more metal riffing in there. Rob does everything, but the music. He does write some, but the majority is written by someone else, now Scott Humpreys is the one writing the music. White Zombie and Rob Zombie kick ass, though. No doubt.

I find it weird that on their Soul Crusher album there is a song called "Crow III" and like 15 years later Rob actually wrote the initial script for Crow III, the movie. Weirdness.

Anyway...thoughts?

I liked White Zombie when I was in Junior High.

I guess I can still listen to "More Human, Than Human" now and enjoy it. So, hit. Wait a minute.

Edit - I never liked Rob Zombie solo.

Devil man, devil man / in my head!

That gets stuck in MY head for weeks on end every time I listen.

White Zombie is great, particularly their last two.

Rob Zombie solo is more hit and miss, but definitely good.

Right, I think The Sinister Urge and Hellbilly Deluxe are mostly hits, but there is some filler tracks. On Hellybill Deluxe they are "Call Of The Zombie," "Perversion 99," "How To Make A Monster," "What Lurks On Channel X," "The Beginning Of The End" and "The Ballad Of Ressurection Joe...," which is basically just far too many short insignificant songs. On The Sinister Urge there is just "Sinners, Inc." and "Transylvanian Transmissions, Pt. 1." Everything else is pretty dern good.

I like the oddball songs, too, like "(Go To) California," "Never Gonna Stop (The Red, Red Kroovy)," and then the stuff on the House Of 1000 Corpses soundtrack like "Pussy Liquor" and "Brick House" (what a great tune), with Lionel Richie no less, I could live without Lil' Kim or whatever ghetto whore that is. But Rob does try and branch out, which is cool.

Yeah, it is. I wonder if his next album, whenever it comes out, will reflect that.

Should be decent.

I've never really liked his oddball songs, the straight-up rockers get my blood going, and the slower ones like Living Dead Girl as well. Dragula, Superbeast... all the predictably liked songs by his fans, I enjoy.

Blood, Milk, and Sky was great, as an exception to that.

Word is this will be his last album. That would be unfortunate. I always held hope that White Zombie would get back together, or that he would work with J. again as I feel like when J. was in the mix Rob was at his best. Oh well.

Have you ever heard their early material?

Fuck yeah! I have Soul-Crusher and Make Them Die, and both are great albums. I like them more than La Sexorcisto, as they have that low ended drone that just sounds creepy and unique. I feel the guitar work us up to par with J's, as it is the Exciter fella. Make Them Die sounds like Thrash riffs that were slowed way down. I know that sounds strange, but it works, and works really well. I like Rob solo stuff, but it's nowhere close to White Zombie. The House of 1000 Corpses Sndtrck just isn't that good, Dr Wolfenstein is good, as is Pussy Liquor but the rest of it is crap. That Brick Kouse remake was terrible, Rob can't sing that style, Lionel sounded like he didn't want to be there, and that ghetto rapping was laughable! I'm Your Boogieman it is not. I had the pleasure of seeing White Zombie live on the Astro Creep tour, that was one hell of a show. Plenty of pyro, a 20 foot devil head at the back of the stage, and the entire Astro Creep album was played. Oh, and Sean was looking sensational that night! Good times, good times.

Make The Die Slowly is OK at best. Soul Crusher is complete shit. What low end are you referring to? There is none. On Soul Crusher Rob whines like a fairy boy, the guitars are out of tune and the songs suck. Anything pre-God Of Thunder is pretty bad.

Well, it all amounts to taste, and it's a known fact your taste sucks! Seriuosly, his singing is pretty bad, but I'll take those two albums over the genericness of Astro Creep, or the idiocy of HO1000C Soundtrack anyday. It's unique, and that's what makes it good. The guitars being out of tune is what I'm referring to when I say low-end, not low-end as in drum and bass low-end. It's a weird tone, and fits the music perfectly IMHO. I'm sure the droning turns most people off of it, but it attracts me to it. That being said, La Sexorcisto is a rocking good album, one that I play regularly to this day. Astro Creep is alright, but 10 years later it sounds extremely dated, and has a severe lack of riffs. I'm not a same riff through the whole song kind of guy.

Dude, I could post the best track off of Soul Crusher and 99.9% of the people to hear would say it sucks. Trust me, I own everything White Zombie has put out and I've listened to it all many times trying to find SOMETHING enjoyable and aside from a few moments here and there, it's overall a pretty shitty experience. It's just not good.

Astro Creep is awesome! The soundtrack to House Of 1000 Corpses has just a few real Zombie songs on it, they all kick ass. Pre-God Of Thunder EP material is utter crap.

All of the early stuff I've heard was three tracks off Soul Crusher. I didn't like it much.

I remember when I was like 12 playing one of the twisted metal games and liking his song that was on it.

And I would care why? I like it and that's all that matters. It was just a little rib man, don't get all ass hurt over it.
