won't comment on the production, but hot damn. seriously stunning album. instrument-wise it's out of this world. breakneck pace almost throughout (you don't have to slow down to be progressive! don't!), but always incredibly inventive and memorable. between gang singing, invited girls, and Roddy's own wider than ever range on display, there's enough vocal variety to go around, and it's all used intelligently and with incredible effectiveness. a lot of that punk energy from Kezia is on display here, as well as some really catchy punk-ish singing bits.
it's like the best of the 3 previous albums rolled into one. just absolutely floored by this album so far, but i think it'll become my favourite from them. this, Kezia, Scurrilous and then Fortress.
Volition is my favorite album of the year, and I think it's PTH's best too. This cements them as my favorite metal band and maybe as my favorite band overall...maybe.
But yeah, they just nailed everything here. Rody just keeps getting better vocally, which is absurd. Songwriting is flawless, and they also brought back the "ohh fuck" moments that I felt Scurrilous was missing a bit. Chris Adler killed it. Even the lyrics are really, really good in my opinion, though some might disagree with me there.
Mist, Skies, Drumhead Trial, and Plato's Tripartite are all god-level for me. Every other song is "just" amazing...not a dud in the bunch. And, I saw them live and they pretty much killed it. Rody sounds great and obviously they're on point technically. They don't jump around or everything, but the crowd was so fucking into it that there was great energy nonetheless.
Yeah, I'm kinda obsessed with this band right now...
