Hahaha

So you're critiquing his production based on youtube videos. Brilliant.

.:crast:.

I find it equally hilarious you think production can't be heard despite the sound quality. Everyone knows what artifacts and inaccuracies are in a low quality file and wouldn't make a judgment based on them either. It's irrelevant. That isn't even the case here as clarified later on the thread.

I know production well enough...
.:crast:.

Bullshit.

Weeeeeell I wouldn't quite say that "Canopy" is as famous as, say, In Flames... :lame:

Still really kick-ass that we have an an artist here that actually, dare I say it, makes money off his music.

Don't worry I am sure he'll be critiquing Canopy's production soon enough (not that there is anything is wrong with it)....

Of course. But I've seen Canopy reviews and stuff pretty much everywhere I go on the internet. I'd say they are famous enough.

SYL is gold but I don't blame you for not liking his solo stuff. I think it's pretty hit or miss myself and I don't go back to it like I do SYL.

Recorded Hundreds of hours of live bands in a three year period. Mixed and Mastered those recordings as well. I don't keep copies of old stuff, so who knows if these still exist.

Quit jobs outright because they stopped me for recording bands for free. Quit jobs that were stressful for my voice. Almost was homeless a number of times. Thankfully my landlord was a rich casket salesman that retired and didn't need the money. Still starved half the time anyway.

Written more songs than most working bands. I put the number between 50-100, all complete. Had no way to record my own stuff for years so the moment passed on most of them. Still have about 20 solid songs I can remember in the vault just waiting for the financing to come through or I meet the right people who have said money or equipment.

Mastered more albums for free than I care to remember by awful bands just so I could learn.

Have a degree in electronics engineering and have invented a few devices of my own with working schematics critiqued by a PHD electromagnetic engineer as being technically proficient. Nothing fancy, good stuff I can use on my voice some day.

Spent over 4 hours a day on average reading production books and have tested and found my own way about the studio as result. Have read dozens of books and applied the concepts within. This is always in my mind no matter what. I can't hear a jingle on TV without figuring out how it was recorded, where the roll-off is, ect. This is my obsession that consumes me at all times. I flat out demand more knowledge and will beg borrow and steal to get it.

Has perfect pitch, intensive ear training, intensive training in critical listening.

I could list a thousand other things, but why bother. You guys will still think Rick Rubin is great even though he is a hack. Knowledge may be power, but not in this bullshit filled industry.

I'm 25. How many 25 year old producer's have you heard of? When people are my age they are usually still getting coffee for people and dreaming of touching the mixing board one day. If they can find a studio that wants free help.

I'm saying the guy hasn't spent the last decade strictly being a producer and sound engineer and spending more time than a doctor educating himself on the subject. Sound is subjective and no matter how good someone is at producing, I still reserve the right to say their production sucks if it doesn't meet my tastes. I have never in any way called into the question other producer's technical credibility, just their artistic ability and writing songs that aren't very moving is an artistic flaw.

To sum it up, you had music production education and did some amateur stuff. Color me impressed. Now you are given the right to act like an arrogant douche every time the subject comes up.

Who the heck is Canopy? I'd never heard of them and not even in stuff like Terrorizer mag which covers all manner of obscure stuff.

No offence to them but they are not a famous melodic Death Metal band or even a fourth tier player ala Corporation 187 (at least they were distributed via Earache).

Lots of bands put out albums. With modern tech it's not too difficult to record them (except for drums which are a bitch).

The other thing is putting them out and selling them.

I used to co-own a label (Dead Pawn Productions later renamed Pawn Productions and now completely defunct) and while it was fun it was about as successful as selling bikinis in Antarctica.

Hell it's even got a listing on Metal Kingdom - well I never.

They are missing the Dead Pawn Compilation Volume I (which I don't even own anymore).

By the way CD's are cheap to have printed professionally. We were getting batches of 500 done for about $3.50 a pop. The more you produce the less you pay as economies of scale kick in.

Not trying to cheapen Canopy's achievements, but more trying to point out that they're (a.) not famous and (b) publishing music can be relatively easy and inexpensive.

You should give Canopy a listen. Unlike most melodic death metal today which I despise, they are good.

They sound interesting. Last Melo Death I liked was Arsis when Celebration of Guilt came out. I used to live and breath MD in 1998-2000.

You guys don't get it. Producing is a rich man's game. Who in the fuck can afford to take two years off to bring coffee to low-level engineers?

If I would have wind-falled into 10,000 bucks somehow at some point, I would be very in demand.

I really do appreciate the nice comments if sincere.

I grew up poor white fucking trash, if you think that has an impact on my ability to record an album, fuck you.

Again, it's a money game, which I don't have and never have had. It's like Yoda Saying luke was too poor to be a Jedi. It makes no fucking sense. Downloading E-books, buying a cheap mic and whatever cheap shit I can find to learn to record it has been my obsession. I am just glad it is the era it is where free ST and DSP plugs are common. It doesn't cost a fucking dime to learn, so that is what I did.

I could have been a great guitarist. But $2000 amps and 3000 dollar guitars have never been anywhere close to reality, so I chose the 20 dollar microphone and the 200 dollar PA because I don't give a flying fuck about having to eat garbage (never came to that, but close) to have the time to become a virtuoso.

And to be honest, being the poor white trash that lived in poverty, Half my teeth have rotted out and my Partial Plate has been saving my ass on vocals except for the silibant S I have (which I can roll off)

People acting like I am not Terry date at this point are being unfair and unrealistic.

If you don't think I am telling the truth SEND ME THE FUCKING STEM TRACKS AND TEST ME.
