I know they sound nothing like them, but they are all melodic death mehtull, hence the comparison as to genre movers.Say what you want, but I never hear SS mentioned at all around here, and the likes of AE & Arsis have put out genre defining classics.

That's because most of the people around here don't really know anything about melodic death metal, or they just don't like it, and when they do, they say the only good band is At The Gates. I guess Arsis gets good word around here as well.

I've been pushing SS ever since PBP.

Personally I'd say HU is easily a genre definer. If you don't see it, I guess that's your loss. It's far beyond the spectrum of " generic " and Soilwork wishes they ever sounded as good at any point in their career.

And in all fairness only one real life friend knows who they are and also thinks they're generic modern melo-death aping Soilwork.

Your friend should listen to more metal then. What's generic about what they're doing? If anything is generic, it's stuff like Arch Enemy and Omnium Gatherum. I mean, to be perfectly honest about Omnium, their first album was alright, the rest have been very hit or miss, and when they hit, it's not very hard. :)

But ya, no animosity or anything, I just really love SS and will defend them to the grave, yo. I can understand people not liking them, we all have our tastes, but to define them as generic is sort of baffling to me.

Yeah. You know. When I think Scar Symmetry, I think boring. Get outta here, kid. I'd love to know of any other melodic death metal band that has had an album in recent history that comes close to touching Holographic Universe.

holographic universe was zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
with all the great metal albums out there, why anyone would listen to scar symmetry is beyond me

If you like well done Melodic Death Metal, the HU was awesome. If that's not your thing, then maybe you won't like it as much. I agree with Evil Dead though, it's pretty much a genre definer. 95/100 in my book.

Thanks for clearing it up. Definitely a well thought out post that conveys your thoughts in a coherent manner.

Absolutely. I could see PBP being rated lower, and definitely Symmetric in Design as that was a fairly run of the mill melodeath album, but it showed a lot of promise... The band has clearly evolved since the first album.

Thanks for being cool about it.An honest fan is commendable and rare.I've never been a fan of ATG,but they are very important in the sub-genre's roots,as is the other bigwigs Dark Tranquillity & In Flames. My friend is actually a competant musician and metalhead,MDM being his favorite genre. He swears by Dissection, old In Flames,ATG,Soilwork etc and busts out the rare tapes all the time. The man is obsessed. And personally Arch Enemy is fairly unique in their sound, being a bastard love child of Carcass, another great classic.

I mainly just hear a very well produced easy listen with SS,complete with all the modern requisites,be they clean/growl vocals, and that uber-produced sound.Nothing wrong with it but nothing ever jumped out at me to convince me this was something new or different.I confess its not my cup of tea,and I'm glad to see they've got some sturdy fans.Hope you all enjoy the new album,I'll check it out when it hits.

Alright I went and pulled out my.......cd's for a spin each to give 'em a more thorough review, meanwhile playing Red Faction:Guerilla multiplayer.

I listened to HU first, and I heard that it was good.I hear tons of Power/Prog in their sound. Its essentially a power/mdm hybrid, which I forgot. But its alright,at least the guy can sing. And being out of the powermetal/clean sung loop for over a year and coming back makes it a nice listen.I also seemed to be quite lucky, destroying the opposition.

PBP came next, and was thankfully beefier in the guitar tone, and has more growls, thankfully.Competition stepped up a notch during this phase, and the music was a good fit for the fight. :dio:
A humorously I railed the fuck out of everybody(its my favorite gun),and these Japanese guys sent me a bunch of what I can only assume is hate messages/praise.Hahaha.

So yeah,I'm stoked to hear the new album alot more now. How's the debut stack up?Worth picking up?

I think the debut has some excellent songs eg. Chaosweaver, however the overall brilliance isn't quite there like it is on their later albums.
