That's because most of the people around here don't really know anything about melodic death metal, or they just don't like it, and when they do, they say the only good band is At The Gates. I guess Arsis gets good word around here as well.
I've been pushing SS ever since PBP.
Personally I'd say HU is easily a genre definer. If you don't see it, I guess that's your loss. It's far beyond the spectrum of " generic " and Soilwork wishes they ever sounded as good at any point in their career.

And in all fairness only one real life friend knows who they are and also thinks they're generic modern melo-death aping Soilwork.
Your friend should listen to more metal then. What's generic about what they're doing? If anything is generic, it's stuff like Arch Enemy and Omnium Gatherum. I mean, to be perfectly honest about Omnium, their first album was alright, the rest have been very hit or miss, and when they hit, it's not very hard.
But ya, no animosity or anything, I just really love SS and will defend them to the grave, yo. I can understand people not liking them, we all have our tastes, but to define them as generic is sort of baffling to me.
