didn't you guys expect non-metal zines and papers to eat this shit up like chocolate?
And, not forgetting all the fanboys lining up to get a facial?
This album is good but far from great. Barely 60/100 for me.
I think you are expection too much. Come on, someone said that if DM would came after AJFA, it would be a let down - BUT - the Black Album WAS a let down. On this side we have the ultra complex AJFA with 7 minutes plus monster songs, on the other we have the radio compatible Black Album with 4-5 Minute simple Metal Songs. And then came Load and Reload with even more radio compatible country heavy rock songs, that have had nothing to do with Metallica. St. Anger was more thrash and metal, but the sound was awful. Compared to this, Death Magnetic IS 100% 80s compatible Thrash Metal and exact THAT what I - as a big Metallica Fan - would expect from a Band like Metallica.
And as far Thrash Metal goes: I don't want reinventing the genre. Thrash is as good as it is, and so is Death Magnetic.
I'm one of those guys who likes s/t better than AJFA. It all boils down to personal taste. I probably don't like AJFA because it is boring and because of the pretty long songs. If this came after AJFA it would be even worse.
I think they're trying too hard to get back to their roots, and they piled up every riff that sounded thrashy onto this one. And honestly, I think it sounds half-assed.
Thats just my two cents, man. I may sound like one of those "love to hate Metallica"-asses, but I'm not. I gave this one a fair shot, and didn't like it very much.
