I've given this album some fair listenings, and here are my conclusions. I don't have as much of a problem with their new direction itself as I do with the execution. There's nothing wrong with going more progressive and trying some things. They have been doing a bit of that with each of the last couple of albums. The problems stem in the final product. One issue is that you can be more progressive without sacrificing as much "catchiness" as they do on this one. Some songs are technically well done but lacking in anything to hold interest for repeat listens. Another issue is that "cacophony" the reviewer mentions. "My Dream's but a Drop of Fuel for a Nightmare" is a good representation of what he's talking about.
I also take issue with Tony's vocals. I like his voice, but everyone has his own skillsets. His use of aggressive vocals is best taken in smaller doses. When he tries to go as aggressive as he does in several parts of this album, it comes off less intense and more like he's gargling vodka.
All in all though, I think it's a decent effort, even if the final product isn't great. Some just don't want them to stop playing speedy power metal as often as they used to, which is fine. It's obvious they've been trying to break away from that, but other bands have without causing these kind of negative reactions. I personally like when PM bands evolve. I see this album as having only 2-3 really good songs, three decent ones, and the rest is either messy or just lacking in something that makes one want to hear it again.
Strange thing...I think my bonus track is one of the best tracks. I guess I'm partial to their speedy PM too
