I must say the quality of albums released so far in 2007 hasnt been up the standard norm. So far, out of the albums i heard and/or reviewed, Thunderstone's Evolution 4.0 is at the top of the table. And it wasnt a "killer" album either.

Am i forgetting about any particular albums in the power metal/heavy metal genre released this year??

The only albums so far this year I would consider excellent is Threshold's Dead Reckoning and Rush's Snakes and Arrows. Xandria's new one is also pretty good and then after that is a bunch of albums that are just decent or really disappointing.

So yeah, totally agree with you.

I disagree if you're talking about music overall, it is not worse or better than last year. So far Arcade fire, Dark Tranquillity, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Novembers Doom, Tristania, Megadeth and Kamelot have all delivered the goods in my opinion.

I havent heard a large number of those albums, of the ones I have I would disagree. The new Tristania is somewheres in between decent and good but no wheres near an album I would call excellent. I have never been able to get into Kamelot for some reason and Dream Theater's new album might be one I would agree with but I havent heard it enough. I love The Dark Eternal Night but absolutely hate Repentance so I could go either way with that.

Last year was just so awesome, It was really hard even creating a top 15 or 20. So far this year I have 3 albums I would list as a top album. I know it will get better though, the big releases usually come late and there is still a half a year left really.. So yeah..

Tristania's release was excellent, it simply wasn't enough metal for some folks but I didn't really care. I'm certainly not the only one to think it was great as allmusic.com gave it a 4 1/2 stars on a possibility of 5. It's all a mater of taste.

Scratch that..... I've given it a fair chance, but it's definitely a disappointment.

I've given this album some fair listenings, and here are my conclusions. I don't have as much of a problem with their new direction itself as I do with the execution. There's nothing wrong with going more progressive and trying some things. They have been doing a bit of that with each of the last couple of albums. The problems stem in the final product. One issue is that you can be more progressive without sacrificing as much "catchiness" as they do on this one. Some songs are technically well done but lacking in anything to hold interest for repeat listens. Another issue is that "cacophony" the reviewer mentions. "My Dream's but a Drop of Fuel for a Nightmare" is a good representation of what he's talking about.

I also take issue with Tony's vocals. I like his voice, but everyone has his own skillsets. His use of aggressive vocals is best taken in smaller doses. When he tries to go as aggressive as he does in several parts of this album, it comes off less intense and more like he's gargling vodka.

All in all though, I think it's a decent effort, even if the final product isn't great. Some just don't want them to stop playing speedy power metal as often as they used to, which is fine. It's obvious they've been trying to break away from that, but other bands have without causing these kind of negative reactions. I personally like when PM bands evolve. I see this album as having only 2-3 really good songs, three decent ones, and the rest is either messy or just lacking in something that makes one want to hear it again.

Strange thing...I think my bonus track is one of the best tracks. I guess I'm partial to their speedy PM too :P

It's a cover of a Gary Moore song, but it's very good.

I hadn't even realized that, but I still like it. Good stuff.

I also wanted to address to excessive keyboards. Some of it is a bit overbearing, and it seems to me that Jani is a somewhat underused, which adds to that problem.

Still, I'd give the album something like a 70 because I can still find something to admire about most of the songs I like the least.
