Well seeing as how Black Metal is the bastard son of thrash....all I can say is...who's your daddy. And Darkthrone is soo full of old celtic frost riffs so they have quite a bit in common with thrash. But I'm sorry, Darkthrone is one of the most evil bands....but as far as brutal aggression, I wouldnt put them up there with...oh lets say Vio-lence. Early Vio-lence, and many old bay area bands for that matter, who so totally dominate any black metal band, that its not even fair to mention the sheer brutality involved. While the black metal guys are busy chanting pagan rites...or whatever the fuck they do...drink blood, the thrash metal guys would be busy putting a lead pipe through their avant garde faces. ANd that is expressed in the music. So down picking, plus face crushing attitude, plus pure decibel superiority....I would give thrash metal the title of superior genre. More quality bands, more quality musicians.
Emperor is a great band, but
1.) they're not black meta, maybe they were, but the music they are most famous for is not black metal.
2.) The music is too layered and complicated to be termed as brutal aggression, I'd say its pure chaos, but thats it. Thrash metal is heavier and if you're going to use the argument of musicianship, then I'd give death metal artists the benefit of being the superior ones....but only bands like Pestilence or Cynic, or Atheist. Emperor just cannot match up to the sheer thrashing madness of these bands. ANd keep in mind that I hold Emperor in the highest regard, but they are no longer a band, and since they're not black metal fit nowhere into this discussion.
Holy Terror, I like you and your attitude (seriously!)... you're for thrash 100% and you do not bend the knee
and thats cool, but Celtic Frost is not Thrash and when you say "BM is the bastard son of Thrash" you are referring to Venom, no?
Let me remind you that Venom are so difficult tro categorize because they spawned Thrash, Black Metal and perhaps Death Metal on the tail end of the NWOBHM movement... so it would be more accurate to say that perhaps Black/Thrash are very distant cousins.
Lets just say that Thrash and Black Metal are too different to really qualify for a "match" and leave it at that. Like I said before, to me it is like apples and oranges: both are good but different.
But you have got to admit Emperor made some fucking killer Metal, Black or otherwise.
HAILS!
