Surprise of the month

Here’s one you probably haven’t heard. Nails - Unsilent Death. This is a nice slab of grindcore that I feel has been missing in our overly computerized digital age of metal. It’s nice to see a band that sounds loud because they play loud. Not a second of studio magic is here other than an overly static mic. And you now what? It kicks ass. This is grindcore the way I learned to love grindcore.

With ten songs coming in at less than fourteen minutes, the members of Nails are not afraid of brevity. Only one song goes past two minutes being the title track. It is a mean spirited and chunky song with a great riff chugging it along. The guitar tone is thick enough to drown in, with the bass giving an even larger bit of power behind it. The band as all good grindcore make deceptively simple songs that turn out to have even more to them. Is it as spastic as The Locust? Not quite. But I would say that fans of Napalm Death would give this proper appreciation. Scum is a very large influence on the band, with songs like Scum Will Rise. The band is not afraid of a “brutal” breakdown either, but unlike years worth of pointless “hardcore” bands, uses them to their advantage.

The band will keep you guessing throughout the entire record. Whether it be a guitar solo that flies past you before you notice it or a breakdown that you actually like this record is nothing short of a blast. I am extremely pleased that the band knows that quick songs like these are best put on quick albums. This keeps me giving it constant rotations without the possibility of getting bored. Good show.

Killing Songs :
All! But you should definitely give the title track a listen.
