I don't know about everyone else, but I enjoy HT's predictablity. When everything else fails, you can count on the Professor of Thrash to teach you a lesson!

I can't find a review of anything by Nightingale on all the internets that has not been written by a Swano fanboy.. they all touch upon "melodic metal", "pleasant harmonies" and "sing-along choruses". lol? that sounds challenging indeed..

progarchives.com has a bio that even says Swano formed the band with the express intention of it being prog. what the fuck? if you start a band to be prog, you're not prog! :P

maybe if he did this in 1968 it would be progressive. as it is I'm sure it's just another project to go after his name..

the thing is Progressive has become something it should have never been. now it's all long songs with über technicality, cheesy keyboards etc... it's plain boring and it betrays the original purpose of the genre : to be rock that progresses (aka King Crimson, Soft Machine, Van der Graaf Generator...)
and prog metal is just the even less-inspired version of modern progressive rock.

so, if I want progressive music, I'd better look into the post rock scene (GY!BE etc...), the indie scene (90 DAYS MEN, FARAQUET etc...) or the avant-garde metal scene (SOLSTAFIR, SOLEFALD etc...)

agreed.. I've also been enjoying noise-rock stuff like Lightning Bolt, 65daysofstatic and Orthrelm, and it certainly seems more experimental than some dinosaurs (FRIPP REFERENCE!) playing in 7/8.

I haven't heard Lightning Bolt and Orthrelm, can you recommend me some albums?

Here's some more great post/warp/punk/rock/whatever like 65 DoS:

Man Or Astroman - A Spectrum Of Infinite Scale
Mountain Men Anonymous - Krkonose
Battles - Ep C (this is weird stuff)
Ufomammut - Snailking (you like drone so this is good for you!)

ah, I know Ufomammut already, good band..

I've only heard samples of Orthrelm, no whole albums, but by Lightning Bolt try Hypermagic Mountain. both bands are just composed of one guitarist and one drummer, kinda mathy and I suppose some of it must be improvised.

edit: added grammar

Lightning Bolt is a drummer and a basiist, no?

I don't think wrestling would be enough. We need to do some "jugging" like Rutger Hauer does in the movie The Blood of Heroes.

And lets hear it for Radical Cunt, the boards residential dark brooding prick.

I there is three... Well, there at least is a drummer, that is for sure  Or a Bassist that pulls guitar solo's out of his bass, maybe a converter for the guitar, to tune down one octave electronically. Well, I just don't know heheh. But this record is DAMN GOOD!

My review didn't say that shit! And no, Nightingale was started as one-man/one-off project, basically Dan in the studio fucking around. Not a band. The album was written and recorded in a week. It's not prog by 70's standards, it's not Nektar, but the prog of the new millenium it is. There are prog elements, but mainly it's, like you quoted, a melodic rock/metal band.

What does "as it is I'm sure it's just another project to go after his name..." mean?

I suppose I was a little inaccurate, haha. but the description of this project is neo-prog, not prog, and the whole genre is heartbreakingly unoriginal. I won't accept that neo-prog is the prog of the new millenium so do investigate some of the bands Misha, Stefan and I have mentioned here..

and I mean that he's becoming infamous for being in fourty bands or whatever - a forty-first just adds to the legend, right?

Well, by "prog of the new millenium" I just meant that the term "prog" has sort of lost it's meaning, or original meaning, rather. I'm convinced there's no such thing as "prog" anymore. Haha.

As for Dan, he really has only one main band, Nightingale. I guess you could call Edge Of Sanity a main band, as well, and we'll have to see what he does with the Second Sky project, but since he's started that at 16 years old I'm sure he'll take it serious. We'll see, though. But his main focus is definitely Nightingale, the rest of what he does are just projects, mostly one-off or not very serious.

Bloodbath's not really a serious project in the same way as Nightingale. The liner notes of Breeding Death say it's meant as a tribute to old school Swedish death metal. I'm a fan of Bloodbath (as you can see from my avatar), but there's a humorous streak running through it, on songs like "Eaten." There's not a lot of that in Nightingale.

Yeah, Bloodbath is generally what most of his projects, serious in what they do, but generally not a serious project. You know? His true passion is old 70's prog rock and whatnot, I think that is why Nightingale has become his main focus over the years.

Boy, I'm sure glad this turned into "is nightingale true prog" instead of actually having anything to do with whether or not it's good music.

And lizardtail, Swano mostly made a name for himself with Crimson. Any fellow Swano fan I've talked to discovered him through something he did that they enjoyed, not because they heard he was involved in a lot of projects and thought that it was really neat. He does has involvement in numerous projects to boast of, but at least his projects result in music, unlike, say, Patton and his crowd.
