I think that if you were to take part in some of the discussions on this board, you will find Kamelot is not very original at all (I'm not saying The Black Halo is bad). You will also find that your list of top bands is not diverse, but rather generic. Don't take offense to this, b/c everybody has been in this state of mind before. Stick around and learn from some of the other people on this board. You will find music you didn't even know existed.

I don't take offense because I know I'm new. And I have heard some of Queensrythe and others, but I just really wasn't able to latch on. But to me, Kamelot just seems to have a certain feel that the others weren't able to achieve. Maybe some of their songs are inspired by pieces of Queensrythe, but they have a lot of diversity, so much that its hard to pin them to one group. It may even be an amalgamation of many groups, but that can be original in its own sense, and I haven't heard anyone like them yet...

And all I know is I've been told that they were diverse, but, hell, each of them have their own feeling, most bands do if they aren't ripping off another.

::edit::
And, yeah, the whole bloated thing. That's why I never liked Nights of Arabia. I know that may be one of Khan's most powerful vocal performances, but it just doesn't feel right...

Did you manage to hear 'The Warning' by Queensryche in its entirety? IMO it's their best metal performance by a margin.

Not yet, I'll keep an eye out for it. February 11th is gonna be a kickass day. not only am I seeing Sonata Arctica that night, but Kam's gonna be turning the Oslo concert that night into a dvd! Finally I'll be able to see them in concert (sorta). It's a long time in between shows out here on the west coast...

I find a lot of Queensryche in Kamelot, especially emotionwise. Kamelot are extremely good, but not at the level of Queensryche's best yet (they may just get there one day). I'd recommend you listen to Rage for Order, Empire and especially Operation: Mindcrime for Queensryche's best. The Warning, Promised Land and the Queen of the Reich EP are very good, but their recent stuff is prety bland. If you listened to the first three I listed and you weren't too impressed... listen again.

"Sonata Arctica, Blind Guardian, Angra, Demons & Wizards, Stratovarius, Dragonforce, Dragonland, Apocalyptica"

The thing is, with the obvious exception of Apocalyptica, these bands are all Power Metal, and all Melodic Power Metal at that. Not saying its a bad thing (its my favourite genre), but when you say diversity you need to realise that there's a whole world of Metal out there, Death, Black, Doom, Thrash, Classic, Progressive etc, each of which has its own subdivisions and crossover points with the other genres.

But take your time and find your own way with it.

hah, well, as for death, doom, and thrash, I don't like em. Just, seems to be people hitting electric guitars in the most awkward way possible, creating discord, yelling about how hell is loose and they want to kill themself, and calling that music. Not my cup of tea. I listen to music because it sounds good.

You've got a lot to learn. Talking like that just makes you sound ignorant. I'm not saying jump straight into extreme Metal, but there's a lot more too it (a lot) than making noise.

Well Mr. Phoenixfyre I hope that someday you can approach extreme music without any hatred in your heart and you may see something in it you didn't before. In the mean time, enjoy some melodic power metal.

Then, you better listen to W A Mozart, because it sounds good, because he doesn't hit electric guitars, because his music is waaaay better than the best power metal-Blind Guardian-which is much better than Kamelot-which is a good band(compared to Rhapsody),but,Khan aside, its musicians are pretty average compared to those from Angra(which also composed better songs imo)!

BTW,take 666th advice,try Queensryche's Rage for Order,Operation Mindcrime and Empire;they're also a better band than Kamelot,imo!

not a shadow of a doubt about that ! :D

also, Kamelot are not bad but I never managed to get into their music... average and overly un-original comes to my mind whan I think Kamelot...

also, you should try Adagio (I have yet to try their latest but Underworld kicked so much ass I can't see how it can be different now, even with a new singer)...

NP
System Of A Down "Hypnotize" (this is almost as good as Steal This Album, my fav' !)

The good thing about Kamelot is the fact that they have a more modern sound than the average Helloween ripp-off Power metal band! The bad thing is that there is very little agression in their music, and that's what i expect from a metal band!

I'm probably beating a dead horse here, but saying that is just flat out stupid.

Cryptopsy sounds good enough to be my second favorite band EVER right next to Dream Theater.

I'm not saying that you have to absolutely love Death, Doom, or Thrash, but don't go around saying stupid shit like that.

Just some friendly advice.

I say start with some Bodom or Wintersun. They are basically Power Metal with Harsh vocals. Many will disagree, but that is my take on them.

I hope you're still very young. If not, all hope is lost. Enjoy Kamelot.

Kill me why don't you for having an oppinion. I've heard, maybe some of the more extreme stuff, my friends told me its what it is, and I thought it just sounded like chaos. Maybe I haven't heard less out there. I'm new. I admit that.

And from what I've heard, Adagio is damn good. I need to check into them more. Oh and Doctor, I turned 18 today, so I've got years ahead of me.

I remember there was an old thread where everyone wrote how old they were when they started listening to extreme music. Someone posted that he bought In the Nightshade Eclipse, A Blaze in the Northern Sky and one more BM album (my memory isn't that good) at the age of 14...

I'll agree with metalNESS, try Children of Bodom. Also try some Cradle of Filth or other symphonic BM (Black Metal). Cradle did it for me and maybe they can help you too.

And to allude to your taste is tactless. You don't say you dislike Classical music simply because you have an opinion.

I'd suggest you go here, Mr Phoenixfyre:
http://www.heathenmetal.com/index2.html and go and then go to "Media" to get two classic free (and completely legal) melodic Speed/Thrash albums from Heathen. What have you got to lose? 40 minutes of your life at the most if you dislike the first one.

I don't think he should try Bodom,or extreme stuff;first thing to do in his case is to listen to the classics:Maiden ,Priest,Megadeth,Metallica,Sabbath(Powerslave,Painkiller,Rust in Peace,Ride the Lightning,Heaven or Hell,Paranoid,7th Son,etc)!
