it's the mark of great bands that they divide audiences. As many people hate Darkthrone as love them, the same with Opeth and SOAD. A split album would be amazing, can you imagine Michael, Serj and Daron singing together on a Deep Purple cover? 'Twould be awesome indeed.

If by 'awesome' you mean 'I want to shoot myself in the face to end this misery' then I totally agree.

How about a cover of "Feed The World"? That'd get the punters in.

Quote:
If Opeth had albums with 46 one-minute to two-minute songs on them, then I'd like them a lot better. At least they'd be honest.

I don't see how they're not being honest. They haven't made major changes to their sound, they've built up over a while. Eight albums? Fair enough. Do you like Darkthrone? They can't write songs either. Bolt Thrower have only ever written one song, two if I'm feeling generous.

I don't like Darkthrone for the songs, I like them for the atmosphere.
I don't like Bolt-Thrower for the songs, I like them for the riffs and consistency.

Different criteria are applied to different bands in order for people to discern a level of quality for them, Zad. Opeth's riffs are crappy, the growling is monotonous, the singing is whiny, the rhythm section is nothing spectacular, and the songwriting is convoluted and choppy. No reason to like them.

Uh... I think you'll find the post of arguing with DM about Opeth is taken.[/i]

...but, somehow, despite all those faults, they manage to make rather good, listenable, likeable music. What's wrong with that?
Bolt Thrower don't riff, they groove.

I don't find their music to be good, listenable, or likeable due to the lack of those elements.

Listen to Warmaster or The IVth Crusade and tell me that again. There are riffs there. So many crushing beautiful riffs.

"The riffs! The riffs! They talk to me! They talk of beautiful maidens and tall warriors! They talk of the sea and the sky! They talk of the past and the future! They talk of life and death!"

As for your first post, why not? Why can you not just sit back and listen, and enjoy? Why does everything have to have a deeper purpose? Simplicity isn't your forte.

I enjoy Toxic Holocaust. That's simple. I like a whole lot of simple bands, like Bolt-Thrower, Godflesh, and the like.

I can't enjoy something that lacks all the elements needed to be GOOD.

Sarcasm? Whatever.

And the elements are there, deary. Several million Metal Hammer readers can't be wrong. Along with the many Terrorizer readers, and all the people that voted for them on this very site. Like 'em or not, you have to admit people will still be discussing them and playing their music for a good few years yet.
