Hatecrew is actually a lot more toned-down than the previous three, more riff-based than anything previous and a bit less frantic. Despite its critics, I think its a good way of getting into the band (worked for me).

CoB are power thrash with melodic death tendencies.

Seriously, though, I wouldn't really consider them power metal; they're too harsh for that distinction alone. If you put power, thrash and melodic death in a blender, you might get Something Wild.

(Ha ha, I made a funny. Not really.)

I chuckled. Good enough.

Craig, I'll have to give HCD another go.

That would work if DragonForce hadn't (inappropriately) blagged that term for themselves. :P

HAHA!! Wait a minute, I didn't start this thread. Anyway, I still think they are more power metal than melodic death or melodic black. Put some clean vocals in there and there would be no argument.

I think CoB is melodic death metal. They may not fit in their perfectly, but they're better suited for that genre. If you try and put them in other genres then you get stupid arguments like this one.

"Well, the guitars are definitely very power metal-ish, but the vocals are all screamy and sometimes clean, and the drums are death metal, the bass is very heavy, too, so I'd say they're melodicpowerdeathmetalcore."

Lame.

They don't fit neatly into one genre, but I's say they have more Power Metal about them than Melodeath.

I think our definitions of power metal are different. Power metal doesnt have that many keyboards and its more like super melodic thrash metal, though not quite as fast. CoB's guitars....are Euro Metal...ha ha, yeah they have that really baroque driven sound like Eguy or any number of Italian bands that American bands don't have. When I think of power metal I think of American bands like Liege Lord, Warlord, Abbatoir, Agent Steel...etc. They have a tougher sound, the European bands don't. From what I've heard of CoB they definately fit the Euro metal mold, with extreme vocals and such. Symphonic Euro Deth, is what I'd call it.

Euro Metal isn't a genre, its a made up put-down Americans use to feel superior.

That's not true....and besides the term power metal was first used in the states probably around 84-85 to describe really maiden-esque thrash metal bands. The fact that they called Helloween and Rage power metal also is because they had that thrashy edge. They lost it by the time of Keepers II and played a more symphonic stule of metal....that pretty much came to dominate European metal. A lot of bands have the sound in the Europe and its noticeably different from bands in the states.

Yeah, but genre names definitions change with time. If they didn't, Black Sabbath wouldn't be called Heavy Metal. The modern definition of Power Metal fits Children of Bodom quite well.

Fast Power/Thrash Metal is surely just Speed Metal?

Definitions can't change. They can be broadened to include other things that were outside of the original definition, but with metal its really tricky because soo many bands are going the hybrid route. To me Power metal still has its original meaning and I'm sticking to it. Euro metal is a genre to me and I know Euro metal when I hear it.

They're Extreme Power Metal with harsh vox.

This dispute has been solved before with that definition.

I don't like calling them power metal. There is very little power to their music.

What the Hell?

Anyways, Bodom are/were Power Metal. not sure what I'd call them now, maybe Bodomcore.

Deathkvlt started it for me after moving it out of a previous thread in the Death/Black/Thrash forum.

And Dead Machine's described it best. Extreme Power Metal with Harsh Vocals.
