Cats, because they are less work and make less noise. Huge dogs are really just monsters that could go off at any moment and take off your arm, while tiny dogs are just plain annoying. Small-medium sized dogs are nice though.

Dogs.

I had a Doberman (he died last year at the age of 11) and now I have a cat, a Siamese. Both of them are awesome, but... Dogs are kind of closer to me. Maybe because I was 4 when my parents bought the puppy and he was the cuttest being I ever saw. Then as he grew up I liked him even more.

You say dogs need more care than cats, but there are so many things that make a dog better (I'm speaking about big intelligent dogs like the Doberman Pincher I had). They are ready to give their life for you, they are always there when you need someone who could ease your pain, they'll never betray you, and they have human eyes (all of this can even make them a better friend than a human). And to go for a walk with a dog is even healthy, because at least twice a day you have to leave your PC/TV alone and go out. And if you live near the forest, like I do (here in Latvia forests can be found very close to the capitol or other big cities), then it only makes those walks better. You just can't describe the fun feeling you get chasing each other through the forest, searching for hedgehogs, playing at the seaside in a cold windy autumn, etc. Although cats can be loyal too (walk hundreds of kilometers just to find their owner), I think it's not devotion to the master that makes them do such things.
