why they have to be "new" to prove the genre isn't dead? There are bands that STILL play awesome melodic death metal.

Because the amount of new bands is a clear indicator of the development of a genre; if new bands cease to exist then the genre will stop growing and eventually die.

So In Flames plays the same genre than Amon Amarth?
Arch Enemy plays the same ganre than At the Gates?

I don't think so......

a agree on amon amarth, that doesn't belong in the row, but melodeath/melodic death (whatever) can be a broad genre. black metal is 10 times as broad, and nobody makes an issue about that either...

Anyone hear TD first but prefer either of the two later albums? (I add the qualification because it seems common for any music that people prefer the first album they heard.)

I've followed Skyfire since 2002, when they only had Timeless Departure, but Mind Revolution is my favorite.

Although I wouldn't consider Amon Amarth, Suidakra, or even Arch Enemy melodic death, I agree with Damage that it's far from dead. Nightrage is a prime example of a few dedicated legends in the genre refusing to give up, and that album fucking rocks. Also, here's a couple very good new melodic death bands:

Within Y
Soulscar
Omnium Gatherum

And of course, Dark Tranquillity is obviously still churning out great melodeath (and yes, I also belive melodeath is just an abbreviation of melodic death metal). Plus considering how popular the leads and hooks of melodeath have become through bands like Unearth and Killswitch, I would say that it's far from dead.

Well I did mention his top two first, so I wouldn't say it's strictly HIS list. I think I've heard Omnium Gatherum before... but I'm not sure. Sounds familiar.

Behemoth is great music (& don't like the vocals but the music is so great it doesn't bother me anymore) [try this Holy_Terror !]
Amon Amarth is a killer choice too though I liked Versus the World more
Wood of Ypres from what I downloaded on their site, it's great too !

you're gonna have so much fun ! enjoy !!!

Great review Jay.

This album is Dark Tranquility at their finest. Damage Done was amazing but this one takes the cake. Along with being thankful with a great release, we should also be happy that DT have stayed true, original, and haven't followed the same path as some of their Swedish counterparts (I won't name names :) )

I downloaded(legally) "Lost to Apathy" from the Century Media
website and fell in love with it. It is heavy layered with nice touchs of keyboards, guitars are roaring and Stanes Vocals awesome. Can I judge the rest of the album using this sample or is it completely different from the rest ? Is Lost to Apathy the best track ?
Very anxious for this album's release, I'm expecting a lot from it. Hope I don't get dissapointed.
