Most of metal follows basic rock structures and isn't exactly all that virtuosic (nothing wrong with that IMO).
I can party to metal (metal classics + alcohol + good company = awesome) and i can sing along to metal.

My question is, why would anyone really give a fuck about the popularity of metal?

Metal is NOT complex, the songs still consist out of verse chorus structures largely, and if that structure is absent, it doesn't mean it's suddenly complex. The lyrics to most metal bands are often less interesting than those of pop, I don't see how let's kill the dragon is anything more refined than let's party. The layers in metal are often very basic and the musicianship might be of higher quality than a lot of pop artists in some cases, but it's not all that special really.

i agree... but most ppl can't party to metal. Of course, many can party to heavy metal, but not death and black, right?! And partying to metal is quite different from those parties where girls stand on the dance floor trying their best to look sexy... you may be able to party and sing along to metal, but the average person can't.

Mainstream music mainly follows the pop structure, because it's sells records, it's easy music and appeal to the a larger crowd.

But still... metal is still somewhat "complex" for the average person when they're only used to the pop structive... so it's relatively speaking...

my reasoning for the popularity of metal were to be seen with an outsiders eyes. Not a guy who already listens to metal.

I don't know, I think people certainly are market-guided.. Yes and ELP were dead popular in the seventies and their music isn't exactly easy to follow. people for the most part will listen to what's most easily accessible, and most people simply don't like music; the ones that do will dig deeper into whatever catches their imagination..

Its really all down to awareness. To most people, Metal is this intangible thing fleeting around in the background that they don't, and will never, know anything about. Subdivisions like Black, Power and Doom don't exist to them - there is simply this big, mysterious entity in the distance.

Now, I'm not saying this is down to Metal being some sort of special division of music that only the chosen few can comprehend, since this sort of ignorance (and I use that word not in an insulting way) applies to virtually every form of music. Even pop does not necessesarily equate to chart music. Take the example of Teenage Fanclub, a Glasgow guitar pop band that make very little impact on the public as a whole. Even the feircly 'patriotic' ( ) Scottish press make no attempt to plug them, despite the usual attitude in our tabloids that Scottish = talent.

Stuff from every genre inevitably trickles down to form a big easily digestible mush that makes up the charts. People say "Why isn't Metal as popular as rap?" but the fact is that its generally only the lowest common denominator of any genre that sells on a broad scale, and people uneducated in the ways of the genre will not notice the difference. Fans of serious techno, rap and folk music will no doubt shudder at the stuff that 'represents' their genre in the charts.

I'm pretty certain that the dance music that sells well gets as much credibility from serious fans as Evenescense do from the Metal masses.

Of course this inevitably leads to cries of sell out whenever a previously small-scale band begins to sell well (moreso in the Scandanvian countries than the likes of the UK), which obviosuly ins't always the case.

heavy, nice to see you around.

I can assure you that NESS is neither a Korn nor Bizkit fan, so be nice.

That is, I'm pretty sure he's not. Um, dude, you're not...right? I mean, if you are, it's okay, we're here for you. I might have to drive over to Little League World Series land and kick the crap out of you, but, trust me, it'll be for your own good.

metalNESS will eat you alive, man. Calm down. Dislike them all you want, Limp Bizkit and Korn are metal bands. Also, if you're going to call someone a retard, may I suggest you use proper grammar and spelling.

And, for the record, I like Limp Bizkit and Korn.

Also, fuck you all (preemptive). :)

Metal is not meant to be popular or mainstream. It's best underground.

You bumped a thread after ten months to say that? Welcome aboard, fucktard.

PS: Woohoo Korn and Limp Bizkit are Metal. I'm glad we got that one cleared up.
