If that's a fact, I'd make millions.

If anyone can picture you in jean shorts and a belly shirt they would hurl like crazy

I think he was talking about pimping his mom.

Anything on the radio. Try throwing on some death metal at a mixed social setting and see what happens. In fact, I myself would rather throw on ABBA than ABSU at a house party, it's just way more fun to listen to. Metal, for the most part, is meant to be listened to in private.

Not quite in private, but usually in the company of other people who already enjoy it. It's sometimes hard for people to get used to the sounds; my mom always tells me she hates the "rowly" (death growl) vocals I like so much.

With my group of friends, that essentially means in private :)

But I know what you are saying.. there needs to be a majority of people in the room that like something to suppress the feeble protests of those that don't like it otherwise there is some kind of groupthink instant judgement going on whenever you play something that is even remotely unsafe.

Pop music is usually the lowest common denominator, i.e. the thing that all people in the room hate the least.

yeah, but what about metal that is much easier on the ears like Dio or Kamelot, etc? I am not too into Death and Black metal myself.

Well, I have a theory on that: metal, even in its tamest forms, is still music that cannot be ignored. People want music as a backdrop in a social setting (even two people), not something that will completely dominate.

I even noticed this with some classical music - I tried to play some at an art class and people began complaining about how distracting the crescendos were. They just wanted something even keel and predictable that could slip in and out of their attention.

I agree too! So my advice is:you have to educate people step by step, and avoid to shock them from the start:first you play them some Led Zep,Deep Purple,Aerosmith,Queen,Scorpions,Van Halen,Thin Lizzy,..and then some Black Sabbath,Rainbow,Judas Priest,Maiden,..then some Metallica,Megadeth...and when they're well prepared, you play them some King Diamond!!!!

Thus, you show them Heavy Metal is a true part of music culture!

People still see metal as being Motorheaddy, oiky louty, ozzy-biting-heads-off-bats. They accept these preconceptions and don't bother to look further. So metal stays (relatively) underground.

Metal is supposed to be motörheady. Ozzy sucks, though.

Most people don't think of music as anything more than background noise for studying or driving. You have to truly appreciate music to like Metal, and the majority doesn't. Also, it's a social thing. Some people like Rap, for instance, just to fit in. They could really care less, they just want to fit in with the in crowd. People are trendy by nature, and for the most part don't buck the status quo. Metal does just that. also, Metal speaks the truth about the world, and that's the last thing the drones want to hear.

Meh, metal is a trend as well, the biggest trend of all, the trend of not belonging to any trend. A lot of people carefully listen to music, metal is just a genre, nothing more.

Agreed. And BM is an even bigger trend.

EDIT: and I'm disappointed it is that way. Maybe people shouldn't be proud that they listen to metal or any other obscene genre. They shouldn't feel that they are better than those who don't. Art isn't only about music.
