Why are there so few people at concerts and the bands are performing in tiny clubs?

Why are there so few people on these boards? Or are there some really popular metal forums that I am not aware of?

Because most metal is vehemently anti-commercial.

This is like asking what religon the Pope is.

The Metal-Archives have a lot of members on their board, I think.

Korn and Limp Biscuit are very popular. They also have a lot of great heavy metal. Go to their message boards, they are filled with awwwsum people like me.

I don't think anybody cares if metal is popular or not. I certainly don't. Even if i end up being the only person in the world listening to metal, i'd still do it. I understand your post might be more out of curiousity or just to gather opinions rather than anything else. As the above post states, a major reason for metal not being popular is that it is anti commercial. I am not too sure about other kinds of music, but you have metal bands releasing only a limited number of copies of their albums so that they cater only to a select few people/fans. Which band that would want to become popular would do this? It may also have to do with the fact that a major chunk of metal bands produce music simply coz they luv it with no intention of becoming popular. So is with the metal fans, they don't discover bands by watching mtv. There was a thread quite a long while ago where a majority of the metal heads preferred metal to stay underground. So there you have it. Both the bands and it's fans have the same attitude  But like it said, who really cares? Stay metal !

currently pop culture tells us that we have to be ironic and aloof. metal is sincere.

I hope you understand that if you are the only fan, then there won't be any new metal, unless you start paying bands wages.

I find it surprising that there are only about 1350 registered users(and probably about 6% post regularly) on this site that can be accessed from all over the world.

It is ridiculous that Kamelot can't sellout a tiny club in New York City. Why don't metal bands gang up with several good metal bands to perform in big theaters?

Because metal can't be listened to in mixed company. Because metal cultivates an image that even most of it's fans can't relate to. Because people haven't 'heard' of it. Because metal isn't instant gratification. Because you can't dance to it. Because not many hot chicks like it. Because not many hot musicians play it.

"Because metal can't be listened to in mixed company."--Why? what can?

"Because people haven't 'heard' of it."--can't hear of everyone even when they are popular.

"Because metal isn't instant gratification."--what do you mean?

"Because you can't dance to it."--not true, and since when is that needed to make a popular music?

"Because not many hot chicks like it."--is that a fact?

"Because not many hot musicians play it."--huh?

All of my points were not about absolutes, they are just factors in why metal is not more popular IMO.

Anything on the radio. Try throwing on some death metal at a mixed social setting and see what happens. In fact, I myself would rather throw on ABBA than ABSU at a house party, it's just way more fun to listen to. Metal, for the most part, is meant to be listened to in private.

All I'm saying is that popular music has many ways to raise its awareness that metal does not. For example, reviews in high circulation magazines and newspapers, TV advertising, MTV, radio ads, radio play, concerts broadcast on TV. Often people have heard of the artist before they have even heard the song and so they may be more inclined to buy it.

Because for the most part, metal takes many listens, sometimes years of exposure, to appreciate. Radio, MTV and music corporations don't have that kind of time and so metal will never have that kind of backing.

Of course its not needed. It simply helps for a song's popularity because a lot of people like something that has a good dance beat.

WinterIsComing wrote:

Aye, and a well established one at that ;)

Because a lot of the human species, as fallible as they are, will simply like average music because the image is attractive.

So perhaps we just evolved to not prefer epic music, or perhaps there are social factors at play.

"Because it's evil satanic devil music. Music is supposed to be happy, not be all angry and stuff. Why do they have to yell all the time? Why can't they sing. They absolutely have to sing to be good."

"Here, these guys sing"

"They still sound angry and depressed!"

"Here's the happiest Metal ever."

I begin to play a song called fucking 'Heart Of The Rainbow' by Freedom Call. If that's not fucking happy, I don't know what is.

*~HAPPY~ ~HAPPY~ ~HAPPY~*

"Are you kidding me? They sound so angsty." (Yes, I did actually hear this... about Freedom Call)

"Whatever, you fucking freak. Go ahead and listen to your shitty Pop music."

"Wow, you're really angry. All this stupid Death Metal like Korn is making you all depressed. You should listen to happier music."

Metal is an aquired taste not many people can handle the heavy riffs, certain vox's like extreme or high falsetto vocals the intense drumming, the bombastic chorus, etc.Metal was quite popular back in the 80's but it died down when grunge took over and people totally forgot about it.

Also some people are turned off by the image in metal be it the satanic stuff in BM bands or the leather image that most metal bands use because it's out of the norm and people don't like things out of the norm.

These days it's all about the cuteness bullshit that is out unless you look good in jean shorts and a belly shirt you pretty much suck.

guys, if the accepted metal image was frosted hair, eyeliner, ironic t-shirts and khakis, then there'd be a zillion fans of Iced Earth.. every fucker out there is a product of perception whether we like it or not.

that's why emobullshitcore gets fans. they haves teh nice hair.

Some metal is not aquired taste IMO, on the other hand a LOT of pop and rock and rap IS aquired taste.

the image of metal drives people away, and let's face it, when it's not the image the music has to be heard by someone with the right pedisposition, you know?

this may sound kinga elitist, but this way you can be sure that there is real love for the music, not just somthing superficial.
