Metal Storm...you are totallyl wrong...one hundred and ten percent wrong. If you listen to Machine Head by Deep Purple....that's a fucking metal album. Pictures of Home and Highway Star are totally fucking metal. I mean for christ sake, listen to the solos, both keyboard and guitar on that song..totally metal. Budgie's first album, is metal, Judas Priest...everything they have done with the exception of Rocka Rolla has been metal. The late seventies is the old wave of british Heavy metal. The NWOBHM began in the 80's. 80 or 81, you can decide. Some people would say it was 79 because Satan and Savage had written all their material for their debut's by then....and Venom as well. But for the most part the NWOBHM started in the 80's. ANd have you heard the Sir Lord Baltimore albums???? Totally metal. So shut up, you're wrong.

Yeah I figured the particulars would become an issue.....most of the bands formed in the late seventies, but none of them truly became HEAVY until the 80's. Praying Mantis is a good example. Their Demos are all quite rocking, but the album proper in 81 has all the metallic elements.

"old wave" : Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Budgie, Thin Lizzy, Uriah Heep, Rainbow, Judas Priest, Motörhead, etc... is that enough or would you need more ?

Flower Traveling Band (very similar to BS), Lucifer's Friend (Boombastic hard rock feat. future UH frontman John Lawton, partly a german band...), Quartz (said to be part of the NWOBHM but released their debut album in 1977) and, well, it's all I can think of now...

Well then your definiton of metal is different then mine but for sake of not getting into a fucking flame war I will say we agree to disagree.

And don't tell me to shut up I have a right to my opinion regardless if you disagree with it or not.

just one thing : you may have your own definition of the metal but the FACT remains that, though it grew on a different path, metal has its roots in the 70's (check the posts I wrote earlier today for 70's metal bands in this very thread)... you might not agree but you'd, then, be totally wrong... 8)

Roots maybe but we are talking aboud full metal bands.

If you want to get technical metal wasn't a term coined until the 80's so back then it was known as hard rock and still to this day a lot of people still consider a lot of that stuff hard rock and not the real definition of metal but again my opinion you may think I'm wrong but that's your OPINION.

As the old saying goes opinions are like assholes everyone has one.

And in Eyesore's case you are one j/k

They were heavy back then and they're still heavy today. I was listening to Johnny the Fox by Thin Lizzy, man what a great album, it definately has some heavy metal in it. WHether its full on metal is not the case, the seeds were definately sown. And as for bands like Deep Purple, I'd say they were heavy metal, same thing with Judas Priest. and T.I.E brought up a good point, Quartz released their first album in 77, and they're definately metal.

Hey, this can be settled simply: Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath from the album Black Sabbath - 1970 and Metal as fuck. You can't quibble over this, if your definition of Metal doesn't include that song then you need to refresh it.
