What about selling albums to make up for recording costs?

It still has an element of doing it for the money, even if that is the only goal of selling those albums. As I said before, I think there are ways of going about music that involve both making money and having musical and artistic integrity. I can completely understand why a band would want to recover recording and equipment costs by trying to sell some albums.

Perhaps Radiohead's "Kid A"?

Hmm, I admit to being on somewhat unfamiliar ground with Radiohead even though I do have that particular album ... somewhere. My understanding was that their earlier hit was a fluke and something they weren't expecting or desiring to have happen. I really have no idea how "Kid A" compares to their other albums though because I haven't heard them. :?
