im a huge Amon Amarth fan.
are there many other bands similar amon amarth with that EPIC Melodic Death Metal sound.
iv been looking for a while and havent come across many, my mate advised me to listen too the band Death... are there any other bands closer?

im not worried about the viking contingent just the riffs and so forth....

I can't recall a band like Amon Amart but Death is not even close. Though you should listen to Death if you still haven't, they rule.

If you're into Viking stuff you'll find some in Black Metal (Windir for one).

Try Bathory's Viking stuff, and Enslaved (earlier, Frost, Eld, Blodhemn etc).

Death doesn't remind me of AA... although like Kathaarian said they're still excellent and deserve a listen!

as for AA-like bands.. imo a reason for their success is that frankly not many do that style :P

try Wintersun. i heard it's great, though i haven't heard it myself.

Can't say I really care for Wintersun, but it's probably a good suggestion to try. Of course, along those lines would also be Ensiferum.

Zadsterboombox mentioned Enslaved, and I think "Eld" is really good (and it's definately epic). The sound (quality) might take a little getting used to though depending on what all you've listened to before.

Bolt Thrower!!!

Lyrics about war, excellent doomy riffs, deep death grunt, lot of double bass.
I like Amon Amarth a lot, I'm sure you'll like Bolt Thrower too.

Wintersun IMO is not that great, the review on this site is kinda overrated too. Ensiferum is ok.

Opeth is kind of similar. epic melodic death metal. although Opeth does have progressive influences.

This is a terrible recommendation and I would advise you not to listen to it.

I'm not saying that it's a terrible recommendation because Opeth is a bad band, which they are, but it's a terrible recommendation because Opeth and Amon Amarth sound absolutely nothing like each other and insisting that they do is just self-delusion.

I wouldn't be that harsh, but I'm not the site admin! Dead Machine is right, Amon Amarth and Opeth aren't similar at all, other than they are both melodic and from Sweden.

Opeth are great, but they're nothing like Amon Amarth. I echo the Wintersun recommendation, and would add Moonsorrow as well.

Stormlord - At The Gates Of Utopia, fast and epic, I think you wouldn't regret getting this. Like Carnifex said, Moonsorrow. Maybe Thyrfing. Insomnium is definitely worth checking. Moonsorrow isn't that fast but you can't really go much more epic without starting to sound funny.
And I'm gonna say Wintersun as well to emphasize.

Einherjer would be imo the best match (try Blot)

then a few bands come to my mind : Ensiferum indeed, Kalmah, Enforsaken, Gandalf, Diablo, Skyfire, Enslaved, In Battle, Skyforger... those are not perfect matches but I think they might appeal to an Amon Amarth fan... :)

I'm also going to mention Mithotyn. Even though I've never actually heard a full album, I am pretty positive they're in the ballpark here. A little more concise and catchy than some others perhaps, but still an almagam of power/melodic death/viking metal. Be warned though that their albums may not be particularly easy to come by.

Some of the guys went on to form Falconer once Mithotyn ceased. I would not recommend them here, however (they're far more power metal).
