Oh well, Diccon Harper left the bass position after Valley of the Damned and it made little difference. Ho hum.

The bassist is usually the most expendable member in a band unless they do all kinds of crazy runs and whatnot, or sing. If they're just playing along like most bass players...pfffft! See ya.

It's a damn shame too. The bass is almost always ignored. When I first heard Pig Destroyer, I didn't even know that they didn't have a bass.

It is, but that's just because not enough bass players are talented enough to do their own thing within a song. Listen to "Pleasure Drone" on Helloween's new album, that is what a great bass player can do if he knows his instrument. Shit, just listen to Maiden for the perfect example. How many bass players are that good? Not many.

They may be able to go virtuoso like Les Claypool, but a great bass player creates his own song within a song and makes it fit. That's not easy.

To me the best album with bass you can actualy hear is Crimson Glory's Astronomica. The best sound is very well mixed and the playing is awsome. Also a very under rated album.
