 Post subject: good prog metal?
PostPosted: Mon Oct 24, 2005 8:23 am
I'm really starting to move away from metalcore now, and branch out towards prog, thrash and black metal. I have some good progressive rock/metal such as Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Frank Zappa, Dream Theater, Pagan's Mind, Pain Of Salvation, Spock's Beard, etc, and i need more! any suggestions? :?:

PS: This prog stuff is addictive, and about a trillion times more interesting than metalcore could ever be.

I wrote a quick list here..

also, for prog metal, try Maudlin of the Well (more recently Kayo Dot), Meshuggah, Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects and Sculptured. oh, and Zebulon Pike if you can find their bloody demo, they sound like King Crimson plays doom from the samples I've heard, very promising.. that's assuming you didn't just mean power-prog metal, which kinda scrapes the barrel in my view.

It's not prog metal as in the genre invented to describe Dream theater clones. It's the band of former Watchtower and S.A. Slayer guitarist Ron Jarzombeck, if you know these two bands, then you also know how demented a player Ron is! Spastic ink are ultra technical, mind blowing metal. Personally I can't sit through more than two songs in one listening session, but I still love it!

Anyway, for prog bands I suggest Queensryche, Crimson Glory, Slauter Xstroyes, Watchtower as a good starting point.

I have recently been getting into alot of prog. Can't get enough of it.

My playlist consists mostly of what you mentioned already (Porcupine Tree especially. I love this band) but here's a few you should check out.

-The Flower Kings (and pretty much everything else Roine Stolt is involved in)
-Threshold
-Queensryche (Operation Mindcrime)

I guess i am awaiting the new
Vision Divine- Can it be considered "prog" metal. I know they lean or are weighted a bit on the power-side. I do like Vision Divine and Platitude :)

both i think have albums coming...according to the cdinzane.com site

This band is extremely hard to get into. But once you do, it is amazing stuff.

You literally have to play one album over and over before you get what they are doing (at least I had to).
