There's no contest for me. Bathory.

DevotedWalnut, Children of Bodom and PainmuseuM aren't death metal, they're just power metal with harsher vocals. PainmuseuM is extremely good though.

Frost destroys Bathory. Venom rules über alles.

An impossible choice in my opinion. Try out one of the recommended albums from each one and go on from there. I know this isn't much of a help but I can't take a pick... Maybe I shouldn't reply when I can't come up with something useful

I think that Bathory and Celtic Frost are equal, but not so much Venom, I'm not the biggest fan of that band. They were innovative and one of the first extreme metal bands, but then again i think with heavy metal that a band like that would'va come along anyway. When rap and hardcore started, it was (sadly) inevitable that these genres would make their way into metal. I don't think there's many genres out there that haven't been introduced to metal these days.

Frost wasn't nearly as consistant as Bathory.

dunno if i'm alone on this, but i don't like Bathory's "viking" days.

it's just not my kind of music.

Much better than Bathory or Celtic Frost (incl. Hellhammer)... Venom first 4 albums are perfect vicious punky fucking heavy metal... not exactly the modern-way BM starters but still a great band who used to give extraordinary funny chaotic live performances...

Frost wasn't nearly as consistant as Bathory.

That's arguable. I'll take early Frost or some Hellhammer over Bathory's first two albums anyday. The rest is a much more complicated story.

Besides, Bathory never had an ounce of Frost's bizarre standard warping genius. I absolutely love Bathory, don't get me wrong, but from 84-87 CF took metal into places it didn't want to go and then left it in an alley somewhere while they rode the coke-train into an awful album. And the "post-Cold Lake disaster" album Vanity/Nemesis was actually pretty good. Not to say Bathory aren't on the upper end of important extreme metal bands, certainly few bands have made as big an impact, but Frost was just on a whole different planet from the rest of the music scene at the time.

I worship early Bathory (the first 2 albums rule!) but i worship early CF even more.

Opinions, opinions.

Venom still destroys everything (it seems that i agree with the emokid for once  ).

I think Cirith Ungol is better than all three.

Their greatness is udeniable. And I know for a fact that Tom G Warrior was a huge Cirith Ungol fan...and you can hear it in the music too. I'm pretty sure Quarthon was a CU fan as well. Venom...not as much, they seemed like the kind of band that only listened to themselves and no one else.

Cirith Ungol is number one, all other metal bands are number 2 or lower.
