Cloven Hoof only have two good albums?!? Dominator is a weak album?!? Give me a break!

Anyway I did an interview with Payne a couple of months ago, when the new album was still going to be named absolute power, but everything has since changed, North is gone as are the others, and rumor has it the album is going to be pretty thrashy. Let's just wait and see. But come on, how can Cloven Hoof only have two good albums?!? How can a record that contains reach for the sky be mediocre!?!

Now about Maiden you're right on the concistency front, but that doesn't nescessarilly mean inspiration. And I'd rather listen to a single by Virtue or Limelight, than maiden's entire discography from No Prayer forth.

Oh and also you're right, when it comes to nwobhm, Saxon destroy all competition!!

Ya, Cloven Hoof definitely has more than two good albums.

I just didnt like Dominator nearly as much as the debut or Sultans Ransom. ANd I dont think Saxon is really as great as peple say they are. I think the best prime NWOBHM bands were Satan, Angel Witch, Savage, Praying Mantis, Cloven Hoof, Blitzkrieg, Tygers of Pan Tang, and Maiden.....and I think those are the only ones that really struck me as out of this world. Limelight and Avenger, and Witchfinder General...etc etc....are good but they're not as memorable as for me. GOtham City is a great band as well, they're not British but I'm pretty sure they're early enough to be categorized as NWOBHM.

it sucks, where im from good metal cds are hard to find. you go to a cd store and ask for saxon or angel witch, they just look at you and ask what drugs have i been taking? the only place where i can get good cds is over an hour away and with the gas prices...as for metallica vs. maiden i would have to go with metallica, but they let me down listening to ...and justice for all, its a good cd but with too many just ok songs. as for maiden they were kick ass from their debut to somewhere in time, but im not a fan of seventh son. lately i think both bands suck load and reload, wtf? dance of death was a crock of crap the only saving grace maiden had was a couple of good songs from brave new world. if i were to go and pick a metallica or maiden cd to through on metallica would win, but thats only because iv watched cliff 'em all several times and its got me pumped.

Oh my, this is a hard one.

I dont think i'll be able to actually pick one of them out. I love both of them. Both bands are very different, so its hard to say which i like better.
Both bands older material is awesome and both bands newer stuff is ok (not including St. Anger). Maiden hasnt had an album that has totally impressed me since Somewhere In Time.....possibly X-Factor, but that could have been better.
Brave New World disappointed me in a few areas, as did Dance Of Death. Load and Reload were still pretty good, despite Metallica changing their style, i still enjoyed it.
If i had to go by what both bands have done is the last 5 years, then i'd say Iron Maiden.
Overall, its too hard to judge. Both bands have influenced so many other bands and gotten so many people into metal....

What can i say....IT'S A TIE :D

I could not agree with you more(than i actually do :D );as i said before,BraveNW is not a masterpiece,i prefer Load and Reload over DanceOD anytime and X Factor is the most original ,interesting(and actually best album) album Maiden released since Seventh Son(even since Somewhere in Time).

Holy Terror I respect your oppinion because you know your stuff. I guess it's up to taste because Saxon is the more "rock n' roll" side of nwobhm, but on the consistency part you mentioned earlier, the latest Saxon output kicks the crap out of maiden's output anyway you look at it! As for the Hoof, I also like the Fighting Back live (or according to some not so live) album, Kendrik's voice is superb (I've been trying to get some budgie material for ages!) and the EP. And I agree with all of the bands you mentioned, plus I listened to a re-issue of overdrive's material the other day and it rocks, I deffinetely have to get that one.

Gotham City are Swedish, they are the former band of the singer (i think) of Nocturnal Rites.

I guess we totally flamed this thread huh ? :P

Youre right about Gotham City...great band by the way. And for the more rock n roll side of NWOBHM i think Praying Mantis does it best. Wytchfynde is pretty rockin as well. And for super heavy rocking, but rocking none the less, I think Savage's Loose N Lethal is quite possibly the heaviest rocking metal album.....besides the first three Raven albums, but Rock til You Drop isnt so much heavy as it is insanely rocking.

And as for Cloven Hoof, I think David Potter was their best vocalist, then Russ North, then Kendrick...or whatever his name is. I don't like the new guy at all.

Am I the only one who totally adores Dance of Death? Not as much as their old stuff, but I thought it was great.

I thought there were a couple of good songs on it.....my only problem is there arent as many awesome harmonies, and they repeat the choruses wayyy too many times.

Couldnt agree more. Only a few really good songs, but none of them hold a candle to any of their older material.
Better songs include Rainmaker, New Frontier, DOD & Pashendale, the rest are fairly average

Hmm... Iron Maiden any day. In response to the initial question, I liked DOD. Can't even compare that to St. Anger. I'd give DOD 84/100 and st. anger 0/100. That gives the picture. That aside, I feel both the bands have, are and will continue to be a huge influence on metal.

There's no way any Maiden album can be as disappointingly annoying as St Anger was...

I personally rate St Anger 5/100 while I give Maiden's worst (aka Vitual XI) 35/100...

In my view, Metallica has been more consistent than Maiden over the years (which make sense since they came to us 3 years after Maiden and took more time between albums)... I can find a majority of good songs on every Metallica album (except St Anger, obviously) while some Maiden albums are pretty much misses in my book. That would include X Factor (mainly because Bruce doesn't sing on it), Virtual XI and Dances of Death which highly disappointed me after the good Brave New World...

I still hope Metallica has realised how St Anger was lousy and will be back in better form soon (Load form, not expecting any better but then I'd give Load 80/100)...

I don't think Metallica was more consistent than Maiden. Lets see here, and keep in mind I don't really like these albums, but they are Metallica's best. So here are the good Metalli-albums.

1.) Kill Em All (The only one I still like)
2.) And Justice For All
3.) Ride the Lightning
4.) Masterof Puppets

Now here is a list of Maidens good albums in no particular order as this would spark a whole new line of arguing

-Killers
-Number of the Beast
-Piece of Mind
-Power Slave
-Seventh Son
-Somewhere in Time

The final score is 6-4...in Favor of Iron Maiden. So Stefan, I don't really see how Metallica is more consistent.....Fear of the Dark...which is not even a great album, is still better than anything Metallica put out after And Justice....and Brave New World was pretty good, nothing spectacular...but still good. and DoD followed suit. Where as metallica hasnt done anything note worthy since the 80's.

Metallica, their three first efforts in particular, will always hold a special place in my heart for being the first metal band I ever listened to, and thus my opinion on them is inevitably a little biased. Really all of those three belong in my top 20 of all time, all being excellent in their own way and right. And I can't say I really hate anything they've done afterwards either...there's the occasional abomination such as "Shoot Me Again" (poor even for mallcore), true, but still to this day they have that instantly recognizable sound and band chemistry that no other band has come close to really emulate.

But my final answer is still Maiden. Each and every one of their 13 studio albums totally do it for me; this band just rules in every imaginable area there is and they are my favorite heavy metal band of all time.

Which isn't taking into consideration the degree to which all six Maiden albums obliterate any of the four Metallica albums.

While Metallica was the band that got me into metal, I am going with Iron Maiden on this one. More quality releases out of the Iron Maiden camp than Metallica. My three least favorite Iron Maiden albums would be Virutal XI, X Factor, and No Prayer for the Dying, but all three of those beat Load, ReLoad, and St Anger.

A harder question than Iron Maiden vs Metallica would be something like Powerslave vs Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning vs Piece of Mind.

Iron Maiden is definitley made a better attempt at music in the later years of their career than Metallica has. While the Black album was good and And Justice for All was alright, Metallica was never the same after Cliff died, and thats very sad.
