Now purchasing: nothing at all, saving up for the legendary Merzbox.
Is that a Merzbow box set, or something else entirely?
If the latter excuse my ignorance, if the former: WHY?!
It's Merzbow, haha. Fifty CDs split between some of his random old releases and then new or unreleased stuff, or maybe remixed by even more obscure people - who knows?
It's where my taste is leading me; I've managed to shake off my reliance on melody and rhythm by listening to a lot of BM and Drone metal, and the next step is to almost totally abandon tuned instruments to slip in to cybergrind and noise. It's like cleaning my palette; I play keyboard but right now I have no understanding of minimalism and I play too rigidly, and this is the best way I can think of to reset what I know so I can make music just influenced by me.
I actually saw Merzbow live a couple of years back in Leeds. This was at a time when I was very into the most grating of Free Jazz, and also I had just bought The Locusts' S/T, and some Melt Banana. Merzbow did, then seem very much like the next step! I had never heard him before I went to the gig... And it was 40 mins of deafeningly loud computer feedback rumbling. So much so that all the tables in the venue were crawling about the floor because of the vibrations. There was this lunatic middle aged bloke in a suit moshing at the front, whilst another couple were actually doing a waltz. For me, this was such an amazing surrealistic environment... But after that I was never tempted to buy an album, just because the experience could never be the same, I suppose.
