You're probably wondering why this is in this forum, let me get to it. I first heard Kittie some time in 1999, I was in Korea and I downloaded the song "Brackish." It was a catchy, nu-metallish song, nothing spectacular, but it was a good tune. I gave the song to my roommate because he was in a cover band (we all were) and they had a female singer, they covered the song and it became a big hit, so to speak, on the bases over there when they'd play. A crowd favorite, if you will.

But Kittie—though nu-metallish on their demos and that first CD, Spit—took a drastic turn with Oracle. It was this odd death metal hybrid! Musically they'd gotten ten times better, tighter and the songs were pretty brutal. Then they got even heavier with Until The End, progressing more towards a death/thrash/black metal sound, there were a bunch of solos, double-bass, etc.

Now, word is their new album is even more brutal with more solos, more double-bass, more heaviness. Personally, I give a free pass for the early material as the band was young and female, industry pressure may very well have played a role there, but it was most likely their age. Still, they impressed me with Oracle and Until The End!! So the question is, do YOU think they're good? Will it ever be cool for "metalheads" to openly admit to liking this band?

I think they're going to surprise a lot of people with their new album, I just hope they don't get lumped in with the metalcore nonsense. There's something unique about this band. So, what do you guys think??

I don't like them. The riffs they use are nothing special, and while the clean singing is decent, the growling is for the most part substandard. The drumwork is merely decent.

I'll admit to enjoying the songs Career Suicide and What I've Always Wanted, but everything else I've heard by the band has been lousy.

Definitely not my thing.

Why do people need to stray away from genres with all these new, hip "hybrids" or "fusions"? There's nothing wrong with good ol' fashioned brutality. Pick up "I, Monarch" from Hate Eternal or for some gore, "Left in Grisly Fashion" from Prostitute Disfigurement. Leave the "hybrids" on the FyE store shelf...

I say "hybrid" because their sound is clearly evolving, or has been, I think they've sort of found their nitch, and I expect them to simply perfect it (in relative terms, of course). Look, I'm not saying Kittie are amazing, but I do think they're unique amongst their comtemporaries.

Indeed. They have done some decent work, especially considering the rarity and unfortunate crappiness of female fronted or otherwise femininely inclined metal groups. And as you said, they do have a uniqueness to them. It's interesting that an all-female metal band is closer to sounding like death metal than all these twice-removed shitty gothenburgxcore jerkoffs (note for wank DMheads: I said closer, I know they aren't the second coming of Suffocation or some shit). The vocals in Kittie, both clean and growled, are better than any number of current american vocalists, and certainly a step above fellow female Angela "ruined AE" Gossow.

I wouldn't go out and buy anything from them, but they are still a sure shot better than say...half the stuff in Jaden's sig.
