Okay, this guy made this site, and it's actually pretty cool. He kinda highlight BM from all over the world, and though it's a few years old, he seems to know enough about the BM to really tell it like it is.

http://www.geocities.com/james_montague/ed4.htm

It's really kind of a fun read, especially for newbies, but then again, I've never known anyone to know more about BM than our local experts, so I figured... Why not have the BMer's here highlight and talk about the BM around the world from their perspective? IN FACT, LET'S MAKE THIS A REALITY. So, the point of this thread is to one, make comments on this gentleman's world tour, and two, create one of your own based on recommendation, and solid BM knowledge.

Ok, I saw Amon Amarth in one of the lists and then stopped reading.

Furthermore, the last thing I want to read after a long day is another douche bag telling me what Black Metal bands are cool enough to enjoy. Black Metal has one of the most insipid elitist groups around, and I don't need to go out searching for them to get my fill of them.

You may have a had a rough day, but don't take it out on Amon Amarth. Obviously they're not black metal, but they still kick ass all over the place.

I disagree with almost everything he says especially the fact that Abyssos suck.

why does he include Opeth in his site?
Oh and i think Misha, Daniel and Skartasis should make a black metal site... :D

i have been trying to get black metal from as many countries as possible for a long time... mmmm.... still alot of bands i want to check out! :P This link will direct you to my profil at a crappy place i know. The countries are written in danish, but it shouldn't be all that hard to figure out... so far i legally own music with 94-96 % of the bands on the list, rest is typically free music from the bands homepages, and then of course some is a bit illigal  he he...

http://www.blackmarket.dk/servlet/Prese ... w&uid=1800 ( the list isn't all up to date on what i got on my computer, but it doesn't matter for the moment)

note! not all of the bands are good! imo at least 5 % are crap ( according to my taste in music)

EDIT: there's a few viking bands from my early days in bm  won't ever happen again! i promise!

I think he's one of the anti-Opeth fanboys (to coin an oxymoronic term) that are just as rabid in their hatred as some people are in their love.

In my limited experience with black metal, I'd point out Horna and Sacramentum as some of the highlights.

It's a good list, though he didnt give enough nods to the old school. Master's Hammer would own many of the listed bands :P, and no Sabbat! Abhorer is included too, great fucking black/thrash with a great logo to boot.

Guys, way to speed read all the way through the guy's page. He blatantly says that none of those death/prog bands are black metal, but metaler's in the same scene at the same time, playing similar themes. He's giving you history.

And when are we gonna start making our own world tours? I started making mine last night, but became ashamed because my BM knowledge is not so great. :(

Okay, we'll play follow the leader... He started with France, so shall we, and second, we'll highlight the country he forgot in Germany!

France: Well, of course there's the Legions Noir, which he mentioned, but only 2 releases are really enjoyable, while other works of the black legion fall short of non-sensical noise, and boring crap. So, I'll nominate Vlad Tepes, Belketre, and Mutiilation to be on the list for essential French BM, but only for the 2 albums they were good on (March to... Remains...)

Another band, Mystic Forest, has really kicked alot of ass, and if you ask me, tops its alter ego, Eikenskaden. But, both could be considered essentials for different albums a piece.

Another band I'd nominate is Eternal Majesty, because their work on the split with Krieg, Judas, etc... was quite bombastic, and in your face good BM.

Any other bands from the BM scene, highlight em now, and highlight them proud.

Another note, I would only highlight Eternal Majesty's work on the said split, because the full length, From War to Darkness is pretty shitty.

I tend to focus on more progressive or experimental Black Metal based stuff, rather than pure black metal. Taake, Horna and 1349 are a few relatively straightforward black metal bands that make the rounds, along with some classics like Immortal and Satyricon, but they don't pop up very much. My usual listening consists more of:

Dodheimsgard (the late stuff)
Ved Buens Ende
Ulver (mainly Bergtatt)
Arcturus (surprise!)
Peccatum (I love Emperor as well, but lately I've been getting into them a lot)
Solefald
Green Carnation
Ephel Duath
Borknagar
Vintersorg
Diabolical Masquerade
Thorns
Windir
Aborym
Lux Occulta

Varying degrees of black metal in there, but it comes from it in some way or another. Thar be my highlights.

Wood Of Ypres
Ulver (the latest mainly)

those are some of my BM highlights :D
