Well I've always vastly preferred The Offspring, until they went utterly shit after the release of "Americana". As far as alt rock/pop punk albums go, Ixnay on the Hombre annihilates all of Green Days stuff. Plus the first two albums are authentic punk and extremely good with it.

I was actually going to mention The Offspring. I still need to buy Smash, probably sometime within the next few weeks or so. By the way, when you say they went "utterly shit" after Americana, do you mean to say that Americana was their last good album or last bad album?

Ummm... Americana is OK. Not as good as Ixnay.

However it is after this that they turn shit.

You should, man; I heard that Green Day were the best band on the planet..

Well, he has a point.

Well, you know, if all the bands on the planet were reduced to the bands played frequently on MTV, Green Day would definitely rank up there. So there is some truth to that statement.

Eeh, not really. Poppy half-punk has never really did it for me. In fact, I think that Green Day is quite shit, but no respect lost. I mean, they are a GUILTY pleasure of yours.

This is striaght pop crap. They have no punk left in them. They are just for teeny bopper sheep. DO NOT waist your money.

How do you figure that? This is punk, there isn't much thought given to evolution, so if they're pop crap now they were pop crap when they started. They haven't changed a whole lot, I can throw on my Slappy EP 7" right along with American Idiot and not hear a big difference at all. They're a punk band still, an upbeat punk band. They are what they are, what they've ALWAYS been!!

If you want something different from them, buy Warning. Still, American Idiot does feature two 9-minute plus punk songs, call them Epic Punk. Not sure of any other punk band to ever do that before.

If you like Green Day—note: if you like—then you'll love this album! If you like to listen to the radio, then I'm sure you already hate a few songs. NEVER listen to the radio!! And NEVER listen to metalheads talk shit about non-metal bands, I'd bet a million dollars that I totally don't have only one or two people who've responded in this thread have actually heard the entire album! They've most likely only heard the songs plastered all over MTV and the radio. Two 9-minute plus punk songs is something that would have already been mentioned had people actually heard the album.

One of those songs was on the radio. It wasn't really a 9-minute punk song, it was more like that Superjoint Ritual tune, '4 Songs.' They took a bunch of 2-minute compositions and slapped em together. It was the 'Jesus of Suburbia' one.

I actually liked it, though. Too bad about the rest of the album.

I agree. This is especially impressive considering the fact that Green Day's a mainstream punk band. And truth be told, I don't think they themselves anticipated the comeback they would make with American Idiot. Before that album's release, they were sort of a "one-album wonder." Dookie was released, accidentally sold ten million records. Right on! And then Insomniac was released, and comparatively did fairly weak in terms of sales. By around 1997/1998, nobody talked about them anymore. But now, with "punk bands" like Good Charlotte hitting it big, Green Day made their much-needed comeback. I still have yet to listen to the album, but I will certainly do so a little later.

I say a nice punk band turned into an interesting classic rock act... it's a quite good evolution imo

What about punk kids? Don't forget to not listen to them either, because plenty of them would also disagree with you.

Are you one of those guys who loves metal but flips out if anyone would ever consider you a metalhead, as if it somehow would undermine your ability to judge music more fairly than the primitives who don't agree with you?

As for the topic at hand, Green Day is one of those truly special groups. They are that rare modern rock band that is actually lame enough to end up being defended by old men, who end up telling off teenagers and getting all misty eyed comparing them to some other lame shit they used to listen to. It's really amazing. So TIE obviously has a point there, they have a tie to classic rock that allows them to bore fans of real punk and/or interesting rock music, while captivating people who still think Black Flag is too much to handle.

They are punk in the sense that Dimmu Borgir is Black Metal. They were never the tr00est in their field, but the link was always there. Purists will argue you to the death that they are pop crap, but in the end you can't deny that the genre played a significant part in their existence and development (unless your a gimp).

and on Green Day, they were quite true with their independant debut... what happened ? they just went throught the normal evolution process, something most metalheads will NEVER understand... and I don't see why you bother posting in a thread about a band you clearly never liked... isn't that a waste of your ô so precious time ?

Once again the point eludes you. It's kind of sad to watch you fumble around with my posts and attempt to show me up.

if you think I have time to waste trying to bash you, well, you just give yourself waaaaaaaaayyy too much credit... it was just clear to me you didn't know what you were talking about... and then, when one doesn't know, one should surely shut up... :P

Bash me? I never said anything like that, do we have a guilty conscience there buddy?

And I think it's clear to this whole forum that you have a much more tenuous grasp on what you're talking about than most anyone who posts here. You keep backing up your post, apparently without realizing that I wasn't saying anything that your misguided effort even adresses.

Many fans of traditional punk—Misfits, Black Flag, Discharge, Blitz, etc.—absolutely hate Green Day and bands of that sort, it doesn't mean it's bad music. That's the point.

Absolutely not. I am a metalhead, but I listen to a ton of different styles of music. My all-time favorite band is Def Leppard. Metal is what I listen to most, but it's not all I listen to.

Someone can dislike a band, but they can also say "Good song, not my thing." Too many people think if they acknowledge something is good it has to mean they like it. It's like seeing a woman that is very pretty, but you're not attracted to her. By saying she is pretty, it doesn't mean you're attracted to her. You know?

What is your problem? You seem to be making unprovoked attacks on this guy in every thread that I open lately.

From what I see his post seems to be saying something in a similar vein to yours, and still you go charging in making all kinds of inflammatory remarks.

maybe that sounded aggressive but I promise you it wasn't... it was just my opinion against his in the most peaceful way... I know it's hard to show irony on the internet, I tried my best... sorry that you didn't understand that... I'll try harder next time :D
