Hate Them was way better. Sardonic Wrath was just....hmm... uninteresting.

Its not bad, but it in no way approaches the eminence of the first three, or Panzerfaust, for that matter... still, it is Darkthrone.

Most people seem to regard Transilvanian Hunger as Darkthrone's best record. I like A Blaze in the Northern Sky and Under a Funeral Moon better. I quess i'm weird.

Transilvanian Hunger is still killer, though. I give it 80/100.

First 3? Transilvanian Hunger was their 4th record (or 5th, if you count Goatlord, which was recorded between Soulside Journey and ABitNS but released later).

Get your facts together! :P

A Blaze remains the best as far as I'm concerned, with Panzerfaust in secound.

HAHA! I am guilty of the same mistake. I always forget Soulside Journey as well.

I sure as hell don't think so! It's probably the most mind-numbing slab of droning repetition I have ever listened to. The rest of their catalogue is much better.

I don't think it's that bad. It's pretty much perfect for the kind of BM that it is, which is raw, minimalistic and repetitive.
I just prefer my BM more metally. Which is why i love ABitnS with the Celtic Frost-style riffing and everything.

maybe I haven't found the right setting to listen to it (for example I love to listen to Xasthur while working). Obviously sitting at a computer in rapt attention is not it.

Oh.
Although Soulside Journey could be called black metal (or at least black/death metal), because thematically it is black metal.

soulside journy is death metal, then they went black metal, which is weird cause usualy for most bands its the other way around.

The lyrics on Soulside are BM. Musically it's death metal. So it's fair to call it black/death metal.
BM is defined not only by the music, but also the themes and ideology.

I've always thought the whole idea that Black Metal is a lyrical theme or an idea moreso than a musical one is at least at little bit of a pile. Obviously it's a strong presence, but where is the list of what exactly constitutes BM lyrically, is it dark cold forests? satanism? what? Obviously lyrics are a big part of any genre, with Death Metal there is the gore theme, with progressive rock the lyrics are often spacey and philosophical even bordering on insane, power metal has got it's valor and swords and steel, etc. But what really makes those genres, and their bands, is the music. The lyrics are an afterthought. Even though they often link up sometimes they don't, and that's fine.

You are right, the lyrics don't have to be satanic, and I prefer them to be not. A lot of bands that I listen to have a sort of dark or sad poetry for lyrics, nature oriented or not. Usually the lyrics are indeed "dark", but that is not always the case, at least if you do not count victorious battles to be dark.
