Thanks for that track you sent, Emokid!

Anyhoo, I have now heard that one, Eternal Rest and something else that I can't remember the name of.

Anyhoo here is what I think.

Pros:
Eternal Rest sounds like Faith No More would if they had played thrash.
Excellent guitar solos
Some very nice riffs, both in a thrashy and occasionally Powery kinda way.
Some of the twin lead parts are excellent.

Cons:
Tooooooo catchy. Sonata Artica are catchy in a very good way, but this is catchy in a slightly annoying way.

So, overall, I like this band, but would not listen to them that often because some of their choruses are annoying.

Hmmm, personally I reckon their guitar solos are a bit too simple, but catchy as hell, definatly...

By power standards they are simple, I guess, but I think that compared to most thrash guitarists they are outstanding.

so they succeeded in their intention... they sure try to write catchy music and it sure is damn catchy ! the only thing that can stop a metalhead into heavy/power to like A7X is the voice of their singer... otherwise, the music kicks ass. well, since I like the vocals too I have nothing bad to say about this band... :D

BTW, Rio, does it sound like alternative metal to you ? imo this thread belongs in the heavy/power metal section

But like I said, I find them catchy in an annoying way! Kinda like Good Charlotte is catchy. Obviously this band ARE infiitely superior to Good Charlotte, but when I hear GC's songs it feels like their choruses are being drilled into my head against my will- similar to a lesser extent with A7X

Actually, as I said, Eternal Rest sounds almost like Faith No More in parts. So in this regard I would definitely say they sounded "alt". Otherwise, the main reason I put them in this forum so it would be next to the "metalcore" thread... So people done reading about them there can immediately see this waiting for their input. :P

But if this was moved to the Heavy forum I would have no complaints.

A7X are like GC, only doing to metal what GC did to punk. Heinous, IMO, they should be hunted down and Stopped before they damage metal any further.

I thought Waking the Fallen was a really good album. It was influenced by a bunch of different eras in metal with a touch of modern punk/hardcore. I'm into all those things, so I really dig it.

But City of Evil has been a big disappointment to me. Like a friend of mine said to me, "this is too much Queen for me". The riffs just don't grab me, and the songs are too OTT theatrical for me. And whereas there were some cool harsh vocals mixed with singing on the last album, this album is all sub-Ozzy whining. I did like the song with the acoustic guitar ending, and the Dimebag tribute song was cool, utilizing a Pantera-ish guitar riff in there...

If they're selling a lot of records, more power to A7X. But I wonder what Warner Brothers was thinking when they signed them. It seems like all the songs are cheesy 7 to 9 minute (repetitive) epics, not exactly fit for radio play or MTV.

you know you've heard good music when you cant put the band into a genre, or if you have to, you must use at least 6 different ones to describe them. Well I love A7X. Whats amazing is that they have a hint of all there insperations in there music, Mettalica, Guns and Roses, AFI ect. The vocalist had surgery so he cant scream anymore, but City of Evil does not disapoint, sounds like 21st century Guns and Roses, except refering to Bats, and not sex, drugs, and girls like Guns and Roses did ohhh so well. but yeah thats my opinion, if you have only listened to City of Evil, check out Sounding The Seventh Trumpet before you judge, if you have, then say all you want lol.

I just got around to downloading a couple of songs by A7X, and I am actually impressed. I heard one song that will stay in my head for a while, "Beast and the Harlot." Is the entire album as good as this song?

Waking the Fallen was alright.

But the vocals on City of Evil slaughter the album. I can't stand them.

I liked a song or two from what I assume is their first album, the one before Waking the Fallen I think...but it was nothing special. The new stuff is increasingly awful, I'm going to have to agree (to a degree) with zad. Avenged Sevenfold is another peice to the puzzle of modern metal being dismantled by hardcore and emo kids.

Actually I find it's the vocals that ruin it IMO.

Thank god, I thought the forum had been taken over by emocore heads. A7X are rubbish. Has everyone forgotten? Bands with a number in their name are shit, with the possible exception of v28
www.v28.com
Only 'possible' exception b/c I haven't checked them out properly yet.
