One of my most listened recordings, at least going back a decade or even more so. Still listened to this day, never nearly as much anymore, yet still, it never completely leaves my memory. And this speaks profusely about the stellar status of the music itself.

I like several of the Opeth albums which followed the first three, but none of them connect to me as emotionally as those first three. Morningrise was the first one I bought (paired with Blackwater Park oddly enough) and was my favorite record for a few years. The melodies are unsurpassed imo.

Definitely. The melodies I believe were never to be repeated again by him. And the vocals. The word "unsurpassed" is aptly used here.

Such an excellent album.

Exceptionally strong intro/first track, I managed to get several people to admit liking Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah on a metalcore band discord, which probably speaks to how universally strong the album starts.

The opener, specially, yes, but the rest of album is such that no metal recording comes close to this particular gem.

Well I got through Blood Geometry, but not all at once, and I nearly skipped the last track. I still think it starts off strong with Choir of Venus and Temple is Falling, Sigils and Pyramids certainly have their moments too, but for me the album comes down to Blood of Ancients, Blood of Hatred. The blastbeat section at 8 minutes, the indelible tremolo riff at 16 minutes, the slower, ambient sections in between, the doomy section at 23:45, it all turns out to be an excellent album length song on its own. Also Skepticism, Mournful Congregation, and Esoteric are much better for my psyche than this, I can't imagine ever wanting to revisit it.

Most definitely. A very detailed analysis. I would much prefer the aforementioned bands than going back to this album. It is just a very horrific experience that I do not wish to repeat. Thank you for taking the time to revisit, North.

turned this one off 6 songs through because it was boring as shit. high reviews on metal-archives for whatever reason. wasn't my style of DM.

To tell you the truth Husker, I don't think many and I mean the vast majority "reviewers" and "enthusiasts" at the Archives are of a sound and reasonable mind. Many of the reviewers are simply off mark. I used to read reviews and also read posts but in the past several months perhaps bordering on year or so, I still do, but with having in mind my expressed sentiments. So, with a very strong dose of skepticism and doubt. They are intoxicated with their heightened sense of self-importance and grandeur. That is, in reality, mostly spit-balling and wrong-headed.

Soen is being played as I write this posting and the second recording is my morning-played album.

I don't think the critiques are quite accurate about comparing Soen to Tool. Of course, there are similarities to be found in their music, in which, denying this similarity would be irrational. Although, I do think that Soen is different from Tool in the following sense. Soen, is in my opinion, musically more complex with more diversity and varied structures, in a given song, specially with such a gifted drummer.

The vocalist is truly a marvelous singer, with a profuse degree of emotion and soul. I also think that Soen's lyrical content is much more thoughtful. Not only that, I also think that Soen's artwork and the entire overarching concept of the band impresses an authenticity, that I do not sense from Tool. To give Tool credit, I do believe that Tool created an entire genre all by existing as such. Consequently, I would like to say that in truthfulness, without Tool, Soen would not exist. Not the least, I would say that Soen contains a character of entirely their own, even on this debut.

Image

This recording holds a very profound place in my heart. It is filled with fire, force, and energy, but it is a recording that excels at obscurantism and possesses a truly occult atmosphere that is genuine. Not something that can be shared with many other bands that are common in theme and content. Truly dark romanticism that successes without a lingering and a noticeable air of pretentiousness.

First disc.

Husker's posts has made me crave Therion. I heard this recording a few days after it was released. Music of the highest caliber. Terrific front-man. Quite the gentleman.
