Holy shit! This record is legitimately good. Past the lukewarm opener, the first half of Hardwired is pretty damn stellar. Groovy thrash riffs abound, Hetfield sounds better than he has in 20 years, Ulrich's drums don't sound like tin cans and (gasp) DUAL!! fucking leads from Hetfield and Hammett. Dear God, it sounds like they're trying again. Unfortunately, the record does lose steam on the second half with tracks like Am I Savage? and Murder One feeling like lost cuts from the Load sessions (boo!). Spit Out the Bone closes out the record nicely but, with a little bit of trimming, this could have been an honest-to-god great album. Color me impressed, boys.
