I respect and like Alex's reviews, and I know CrimsonMoon likes this band too, but I still don't understand why or how this band is considered up there with MDB. I'll try some of this album in the interest of being fair.

I was listening to Brave Yesterdays again yesterday (hah), and still think that Katatonia's doom/death period is the only serious rival to MDB.

My last reply in the "now playing" thread was a reply in attempting to be more objective towards Draconian, albeit more fair. I haven't listened to them in a very long time and, more than frequently, never desire to take an album off the shelves from them. I think MDB, is in a league of their own substantiating themselves with some brilliant song-writing. Draconian, on the other hand, is much lighter, fluffier, and easier to digest say compared to giants such MDB, or other "harder" to digest Doom acts. There is strong harmonious "easier" melodicism and a special "aura of attraction" with the sumptuous female vocalization in Draconian. There is dramatization in both bands, however, expressed very differently.

Draconian's early period is pretty good, not MDB good but still good, and while MDB have mellowed over time Draconian kind of started that way and only got softer. In terms of absolute consistency there's no doom band which can rival MDB. That being said there are certainly albums I like a good deal more then anything MDB have released.

Just picked this up due to comparisons with opera themes commonly found in both classical and metal. Of course, that was already known by me though it was a refresher to my past strong affinities with this band. This album indeed deserves the score given to it as it evokes great mood and emotional grandeur. However, I did like the former female vocalist better as mentioned by Alex. Would have rated it in the high 80's. An enlightening experience. Thank you, Alex.
