Court in the Act is... one of the top three most important heavy metal albums ever in my opinion .
Genuinely curious how you arrived at this position.
Yeah, not convinced.
...but this album is fucking amazing. Goddamn this is good. I won't say it's better than Court, but it has gripped me way quicker than it took me to get into Court. Possibly due to when I am listening to each album, but still I'm saying it.
I find it to be the very first album of its kind, i.e. the first European power metal album. This style definitely wasn't in vogue and has been hailed by just about everyone as being way ahead of its time. These songs were all for the most part written in the latter parts of 1981 and early 1982 so they represent a tremendous leap in the evolution of heavy metal. Sadly this gets overlooked a lot, but this band revolutionized heavy metal in my opinion but unfortunately Metallica is credited for this.
So that's my personal opinion. To me, it is one of the most important because of what it represents, a huge leap forward. Taken together with the fact that they were the first to sound like this, and that the style pretty much exploded afterwards to me makes it extremely important. it is probably the most underrated historically significant album ever to me. Bands from Exxodus to Blind Guardian cite Satan as one of the main reasons they sound the way they do.
Ok, that makes sense. Metallica has always been overrated, though. A case of the right place at the right time.
I remember when Court In The Act came out, it wasn't all that unknown. I personally would have cited Melissa as the more important album of that year, but that's how it always goes.
Also, Heavy Metal Maniac came out that year and it really stepped up the intensity level exponentially.
Naming "important" albums from that era is tricky, though. the early 80s were a turning point in so many ways, so there are a lot of contenders to choose from.
