Currently, finished two of four final papers. Four more pages on Spivak, six more on Bhabha on Fanon and then it is getting drunk in the sun time. I may get drunk tonight even if I don't finish today. Have a bottle of Kraken on my fridge that needs to be finished in the next week before I move. In the meantime, I plan on partying, and like noodz, pursing "lo-fi sexytimes" by possibly making out with a lady friend if she's down.

Had to Google and I gotta say, I'd need a few strong drinks after writing about any of those. Sounds interesting though, I have sort of a brief understanding of post-colonialism (I think?) from a couple of sociology courses I took in undergrad, def not to any real depth though.

Took a graduate level course on post-colonialism this semester. The subject matter bled into another course's final paper. Basic conclusion is always that post-colonial theory is composed of assholes and Fanon did it better. Finished the Spivak paper. One left. Spent last night getting hammered and playing pool. Bro forced me into a bro hug. It was awkward. My night literally concluded with me laying in front of my apartment door and eating a chicken quesadilla, then passing out in front of my door and at some point waking up and wandering into bed. Hungover, but must read prior to a bourgy soiree tonight at some rich bitch in my dept's house.

This is fucking horrifying. Oh my god.

I fell asleep reading a book for the first time. Waking up in reading position is weird.

Went to the first afternoon of a philosophy conference. The four talks were really interesting and inspiring, so it's going much better than my last conference, which left me wondering if this is what I want to do.

went to Rio de Janeiro for the long weekend. it was fucking awesome.

it's so infinitely superior to Sao Paulo in almost every aspect, it's not even funny. the dramatic natural setting, with the lakes, hills, forests and bays, and the city, nestled there in between, like specks of paint on a privileged natural canvas, is just unbelievably beautiful. everyone is gorgeous. they have a bit of a (charming, obviously) Portuguese twang to their Brazilian accent.

loved the time at the hostel. first time i met and hung out with a large hostel group. dunno if i was lucky or had simply been doing it wrong so far.

hiked/climbed (last 20-30 meters) up Pedra da Gavea (840 metres high), awesome experience, i think i will try to incorporate this kind of stuff into my future trips, when possible.

the big-city-ish central district was completely unexpected. i've never been to NYC but what I saw in Rio was more or less what i imagine that city to be like in the busy avenues with tall buildings and shit.

beach was great (hard to believe this is what they call winter!), and the nightlife is varied, from street stuff in Lapa (a lot like Lisbon's Bairro Alto), to samba stuff to fancy-pants dance clubs with the usual pop music.

all in all, easily one of the best trips i've ever done, right up there with my favourites from Mexico and France. if you get the chance to visit Rio, do it!

I just googled Pedra de Gavea and it looks super beautiful.

Linguistics girl who was visiting and all dressed up for the conference was really into the swing band playing on the quad so I taught her to dance and we drank wine on the beach and then we talked of semantics and frolicked in her room til dawn.

I scrolled down and the last time that I posted in this thread was prior to going to a dinner party with a friend from class. Totally ended the night by hooking up with said friend on another friend's couch. Preceded to hang out with this girl for the week prior to leaving VA. Moved back to Ohio for the summer two weeks ago. Three days after being here, girl hopped on a train from DC to Cincinnati to come hang out with me. We bounced around town for nine days and I put her on the train back to DC Sunday morning. So busy living it up in Cincinnati that I hadn't had time to post on here or write reviews for that matter. Was rather lovely cooking amazing meals, walking across the city, dining at amazing restaurants and just overall sharing my city with someone who never once considered coming here. It didn't hurt that we had crazy amounts of sex all week.

Now that she's gone, back to learning French over the summer and reading Kant.

i get zero action so there's that. going to cool restaurants is about the nicest thing i get to do. travel is restricted because Brazil is so goddamn large, but i'll make an effort. can't even run with the fucking cold these days. 'eternal summer in Brazil' is only true above the tropic of capricorn, as i am learning the hard way.


it is, man. will definitely try to do this hiking/climbing stuff more often after this.
