The only real complaint I have about this album is that I'm not too crazy about the lyrics. I'd rather have them do crazy battle lyrics and concepts and stuff like that, but here most of the lyrics are just band angst, which is my least favorite kind of angst, and the lyrics certainly don't match the ecstatic and frantic feel of the music. The first three songs have the best lyrics on the album, everything after that tends to be kinda silly.

I don't mind that the lyrics are about band-related stuff since I think the most interesting writing comes from stuff the writer thinks about.

Yeah, the lyrics are kid of hit and miss with me as well. I loved the lyrics on Fortress. This album keeps growing on me though. At first I was kind of disappointed, but now I love it. I still think I prefer Fortress though.

The "Tandem" lyrics are really awesome...very intimate, great imagery. I really like "C'est la Vie"'s lyrics as well. Not a huge fan of Moonlight/the band stuff, I gotta say, but it barely takes away from the music, slash not at all. Sex Tapes lyrics are pretty fucking funny at times.

...stiff inside their pants!

In the sickly green she might have been
A girl I know, a place I've seen

Between the sweat and the silhouette
Between the drink and the regret

I love these lyrics so much. They make me smile.

Yeah, Sex Tapes is pretty awesome.

Be careful what you're looking at cause it just might be looking back!

Great music! A little too swirly for my taste though. The singer makes some parts, and ruins others. Unfortunately, you are only as strong as your weakest link. The same goes for songs. When a part of the song sounds crappy, it kinda ruins the whole thing for me. In Hair-Trigger He's like "That sweet little redhead's got her hooks in my back", which is bad ass. Then he ruins it by singing like some kind of sissy in another part of the song. Well guess what? I can only listen to parts of songs and that ruins the album. I gave this a 83 or something because I really wanted to like it. I really liked a few songs off of their last record, but this one is a good example of what happens when songwriting loses to technical showcasing.

Don't really agree since imo the songwriting on Scurrilous flows a lot better than on Fortress (or Kezia). Also I can't think of any parts that sound like twiddly bonk for the sake of twiddly bonk on Scurrilous but I can think of at least two or three on Fortress.

Been listening to this again lately. Still so fucking good. Best album of the year. Hands down. Nothing is going to top it. For serious.

sorry for bringing this back up, but PtH are probably my favourite band and it took me a while to really sink my teeth into this one (although i don't think i'm done yet).

it's a very good album, better (heavier and faster-paced) than Fortress, but not at the level of the very best moments in Kezia, which make it my favourite PtH album, or at least the one where my favourite songs are.

i don't think there's as as much vocal variety as there could be. he spends a lot of time... stretching his voice. it's hard to explain, but while in previous albums he sounded loud and heavy but clean, here it doesn't sound completely clean, like he's almost screaming. the harsh vocals are gone, and so are most of the band back up vocals (used so well in Bloodmeat and even in C'Est la Vie), but Rody does this cool deeper voice in parts, like in Sex Tapes. i was also happy to hear Kezia girl's voice again, but it's good that the band use her only sparingly and tastefully.

i miss the plainer, heavier riffs in Kezia, and how in that album sometimes the guitars just seemed so... emotional with the voice, like when he went 'no one ever said i'd have to pull the trigger on her' in Blindfolds Aside. here there's a lot of twirling around but while it sounds good it doesn't hit you as hard or as emotionally as in that album.

the lyrics suffer a bit from the swearing, it was a bit jarring for me, but while i preferred the story in Kezia, i have to say that the more personal nature of the lyrics here was very elegantly conveyed for the most part.

some songs, like Tandem and Dunsel, could have done with some cutting at the end and beginning, and Tapestry wasn't that memorable for me, but there are no real duds in the album, and i don't skip any songs when listening to the album, which is unusual for me. highlights for me are Termites and Sex-Tapes. i don't get your gripes with C'Est la Vie. the gang-sang bit is awesome, and the second time he says 'stepped off a chair...' is just gloriously loud. the song is the most different (simpler) from the others, but it's no worse for that, imo.

by the way, this site needs an archive review of Kezia, an album that i would qualify as a Staggering Work of Genius. absolutely amazing energy, awesome lyrics, great concept, an incredible display of raw talent.

EDIT - wow, probably my longest music-related post here. also, some of you having had more time with this album, how has it aged for you? for me it's still improving with every listen and closer inspection of the lyrics.

this album definitely doesn't sound meandering, and especially not in the same way as some parts of Fortress. Kezia had parts with immature songwriting, but on the other hand some transitions from slow to fast or from soft to heavy were really well pulled off, imo.

finally, have you guys heard the sped-up version of Moonlight? it's badass.. imo better than the original:

Scurrilous is still fucking amazing. I never fell in love with Fortress and wouldn't ever rate it over 70/100, but this is easily a 90 for me. I wish it had heavier riffs and the dramatics of Bloodmeat, but the songwriting is exponentially better and the hooks are perfect. Next album combine the two aspects and I'll easily put them up there with DEP in terms of quality, maybe if I can find something redeeming in Kezia (still can't listen all the way through that album).

Fortress was a bit of mixed bag for me. at its best it's amazing, but songs like Limb From Limb were pretty meh.

Kezia isn't perfect, some parts still sound disjointed, or some songs can't carry all the way through, but the concept is the coolest, with brilliant lyrics and a ton of stand-out verses, and the first 6 songs are good to great, with some downright astounding moments (the first minute or two of Blindfolds Aside comes to mind). the 3 Kezia character songs are ok, a bit too long imo... and i would've done away with the whole gang shouting bit in Turn Soonest to the Sea. the last song is also amazing, a ton of energy and a with great slow-fast/soft-heavy transitions, probably the most seamless in the album. i can't listen all the way through, but it's the one with my favourite PtH songs. in that sense, you can tell that the band got way more consistent in Scurrilous.

what an absurdly talented group of people.

oh and dude check out that sped up version of moonlight

I love C'est la Vie, Hair Trigger and Moonlight. They're a great band. Shame they're a little bit shoegazey live.

i quite enjoyed Moonlight until i heard a sped-up version on youtube that's even better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_JMtOnYBro

i sort of ruined the original for me though

what do you mean with shoegazey live? from the videos i saw on the internets they don't seem as good live, though, no.. i'd still try to catch them though :dio:

I've seen them live three times now. Rody's vocals can be a bit iffy, although each show he was better and better, and they don't spazz about like TDEP or something, but they have a really great "dudes having fun playing amazing music" stage presence. Especially Arif.

By shoegazey I mean they gaze at their shoes, don't move around much, at least from what I've seen.

I really like how that staggery instrumental part switches to the next riff in Moonlight. Very weird and cool.

That's not what shoegaze means... And yes, they're boring technical, yet it's so fucking catchy OMG how do they do it???
