Bathory-Call from the Grave

9

The drumming on this album was definitely the weakest of bm era Bathory, as it sounds like a stick hitting the top of a porcelain countertop. The riff is almost punkish strummed amid the offkey drumming, but Quorthon's vocals ring demonic and he howls like a possessed madman which is a complete 180 from the grizzled veteran I was listening to today on Twilight of the gods and Hammerheart. The solo is brief and just shows glimmer of the man's talent, and it even manages to sound uplifting in the primal music. I've always seen Under the sign of the black mark as being one of his best bm moments next to the s/t, and this song is just one among many hits the man would unleash in the early Bathory classics.

Dead Congregation - Feasting Angelcunts

guitar and drumming are decent but indecipherable vocals (still a hang up I can't shake) let this one down if the vocals were a little better probably a 9 but as it stands 6.5/10

Ulver - Capitel II: Soelen Gaaer Bag Aase Ned

10

The intro is a mellifluous harmony that gets me everytime I hear it, even though Capitel 1 ranks as one of my favorite songs by these guys. The black metal material is more or less Darkthrone-inspired with the added dimension of Garm changing from clean to the black metal rasp intermittently. Garm's vocals would later inspire many bands from Empyrium to Agalloch to Alcest, if you're playing any sort of post-sound or any shoegaze/bm fusion you owe your career to Bergtatt. For six minutes the song blasts from the faster tremolo sections to a few melodic breaks with Garm's clean vocals, following this rhythm until the end of the song. Great song from one of the best black metal albums around.

Great song, if I remember correctly one of the slowest on that album.

Amorphis-Sign

0

Weak almost happy melodic intro that went into a folkish Gypsy-esque intro, then of course comes the awful clean vocals. The guy can't sing at all, the riff is shitty Faggoth rock chords and it just sounds like a happier version of an already awful Katatonia song. I'm not even going to bother finishing the song, Amorphis have always been a shitty band even in their death metal days and their faggoth stuff is even worse.

AxeHammer - Axehammer (Lord Of The Realm)

Classic 80's metal with hilariously cheesy lyrics and cool vocals. Very likable with all of its obvious flaws, 7/10

Grave Digger

decent enought traditional power metal but the vocals wore a little thin after a while 6.5/10

Manticora - Cantos

Great stuff, never heard the band before but it's uptempo, fast and furious power metal with a bit of weight behind it, it really got my blood going. Gonna have to listen to the album. 8/10

Blaze-Born as a stranger
1

Riffs are flat and annoying literally just chugging amidst a midtempo snoozer riff, Blaze's voice is passable I suppose but the lyrics are sappy by the numbers stuff just to suit the song. I take that back Blaze's voice is just annoyingly monotone throughout the already shitty filler riffs, apart from the solo the song is literally the same riff over and over along with that annoying "live, and let live" line.
