Fucking tell me about it! I can't believe how quickly we were three wickets down chasing 450. Embarrasing. Cowan and Clarke need to make a huge fucking stand, but unless one of them gets a double century we're toast, and even then Hussey and Wade will have to dig in as well. I have a lot of respect for Punter, of course, but for fuck's sake can he retire already. He's tarnishing his legacy.

Quiney was unlucky as fuck to get caught by Steyn. I hope he doesn't just lose his spot to Watson and not get another chance. I think Quiney and Cowan sounds like a better opening partnership than Cowan and Warner. Warner just does not have me convinced he's a test batsman.

Fucking amazing to finally have another cricket fan around here! Been waiting too long for this!

As a baseball fan, I'm sure you'd learn to love it. The game is a stats man's dream.

The terminology is just a little foreign. A test batsman? A double century? The rules far surpass my understanding.

It's all fairly simple to learn. A century is when a batsman scores a hundred runs. So a double century is when he scores 200 runs. That's an extremely hard thing to do.

'Test' describes the traditional, long form of the game. It is a 5 day match. A player who plays tests may also play the shorter forms of the game, and vice versa. Being a Test player though, requires a lot of unique strategies because as you might imagine, a 5 day match is an intense sort of thing. It's like the difference between a sprinter's strategies and a marathon runner's strategies. So this guy I'm talking about, Dave Warner, is a great batsman in the shorter forms of the game, but he doesn't have me convinced he's a proper Test batsman, because I don't think he has the patience or resolve.

A hundred runs? That sounds so excessive. Why not just move the decimal place?

And five day matches sounds awful. I can barely tolerate the Olympics let alone a yearly season that lasts months of five day matches. I like the feeling of going to bed late at night after my team won.

remember pups triple ton against the Indians last summer? sure would be handy right about now, need to save this test match, at the very least we must avoid the follow-on (a cut off point in our innings where when we're bowled out the opposition no longer has the option to make us bat again immediately) Warner showed patience against New Zealand in Hobart last year but yes I don't like him overall as a test player opening the batting, Watson needs to bat at three or four, Quiney and Cowan should open and maybe if Warner is to stay in the team he needs to play a Gilchrist type go out there and belt them to all areas of the park make a quick fifty or so to get the score moving along when we need it

Nah, you're looking at it all wrong. Imagine there was a sport you loved, which was only played during Summer. Now, imagine that you waited all year for it's brief season to come around. Now, imagine that when the big match finally came around, you spent all day watching it, chatting to friends, sinking beers, loving it. Now....imagine you got to wake up the next day and do it again. And the next day. And the next day. And so on! I'm sure it's difficult to imagine for you, but Test cricket is one the greatest things for a sports fan to ever enjoy as far as I'm concerned.

Do I remember? I was there for 2 days of it! Bloody brilliant test match, that. We could use another Captain's innings like that, for sure. He cops too much shit, does pup, I reckon he's a great skipper.

Agreed completely about the order. Quiney and Cowan as openers, Watson at 3, and Warner as a pinch hitter down the order.

Clarke and Cowan are looking good, especially Clarke, looks like he's just carried on where he left off last summer

I'm at work, sucks balls. I'm getting ball-by-ball commentary on my phone on an app though. Cowan's not too far away from his highest ever test score at the moment, let's hope he breaks through for a century. Kinda wish he'd gotten a call-up when he was younger, same with Quiney. The selectors play it too safe.

South Africa don't seem to be trying to take wickets rather they seem content to stop runs, it's almost as if they don't think they can win the match which actually plays into our hands a little, soaking up time is exactly what Australia want to do and the South Africans are just letting us do it

Like I said, I'm not actually watching at the moment, so that's really bloody interesting to hear you say that.

Even after losing a day, they were in the driver's seat for sure. Especially given the quality of their pace attack, you'd think they'd be trying to ram home the victory.

I once had a bar customer explain to me that the only reason cricket was popular in Scotland was because there used be some loophole in the licensing laws that when the cricket was on you could drink in the bar pretty much nonstop, so everyone looked forward to the cricket and ended up getting interested in what was originally just a drinking excuse.

I can understand that. I'm pretty sure that in Australia, everything was originally just a drinking excuse.

EDIT: having said that, interesting to know Cricket is popular in Scotland. Do they like it when England wins or when England loses?

Multiple day matches sounds pretty cool. Like a playoff series or something.

I'd think they'd be like Wales or Ireland and love seeing the English lose, you know I actually hear the crowd cheering for England's opposition when they play in Cardiff

Yeah, I would have thought the same thing.

But what confuses me that when someone plays under the banner of Great Britain instead of England or Scotland (like Andy Murray) they all love each other all of a sudden and everyone's from the same place.
