This is a rather amusing subject that I got from the Archives. Should make an interesting discussion! In what way did your parents' listening habits influence you as a music fan? Or was that even the case? What do your parents listen to? Is it related to Metal or has nothing to with it?

That's definitely an interesting question. I think in my case it might be easier to answer if I reversed the question: what do my parents NOT listen to? Since my parents listen to nearly every genre, except for any kind of electronic music. Besides that they listen to any kind of rock, pop (not the top 40 garbage obviously), blues, jazz, classical music and, mostly because of me, metal. The only requirement is that the music is well-written, originality is a huge plus but definitely not a requirement.

My dad and I share a huge love for music. It's been a part of my upbringing. I showed him stuff I discovered and thought was amazing, in return he gave me lp's he though I might like so we influenced each other throughout the years. He had never listened to metal before I begun showing interest for it around the age of 10. He called Metallica ridiculous and said Pantera was metal for old people. Now we're 10 years later and he's borrowing my Opeth, Ghost Brigade, Pain of Salvation and one time even my Behemoth cd's. He frequently asks me if there's a concert in the near future I'd like to go to so he can tag along! The last one we've been to was Enslaved and he thoroughly enjoyed it. Next week we're going to the Lokerse Feesten to see Machine Head and In Flames and we've already bought tickets for Opeth in Novembre (he loooooved Heritage).

But it's been working the other way around as well. He taught me to look for great music outside of the metal realm. I've been digging into prog rock, blues, jazz and classical music because of him. His lp's of King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, The Doors and god knows what else were truly eye opening. Damn, he even got me into Morrissey for god's sake.

So I consider myself incredibly lucky to have the parents I have, to be able to share our love of music with each other has been one of the things that kept us together through tough times, how cheesy that may sound.

My dad doesn't listen to music and my mom listens to christian music and old 60's and 70's music like Boston and the bee gee's.

I'm surprised there's only 2 replies to this thread. In any case... Milan, that's a fascinating story. I wish my parents loved music as much as I did! My dad is very much into classical Persian music and mom doesn't even listen to music at all. My sister has some okay taste for some parts and not so okay for other parts. She has never taken interest in my collection whatsoever which is really strange! I don't hang around my metal friends anymore because of me quitting weed and them carrying on with it. So we were not in the same boat anymore. It's been around 4 years now. I mean I still do have a close friend of mine which is a music-lover but he's much more into alternative rock and whatnot. Being brought up with good habits in music is a very precious and unique experience which will most definitely effect one's taste in the future to come.

Well, I'll probably be the most unique here. Coming from a South Asian background, my dad listens to old Indian music (basically anything pre-60s) while my mom likes current Bollywood music. Any influence on the music I listen to? Nope. Related to metal? Nope.

I will say though that my dad really loves his music. Owns a lot of CDs and is almost always listening to music when he's working. So I guess that part of him is very much in myself.

My dad listened to awesome shit like Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Floyd, Sabbath, AC/DC but didn't mind stuff like Metallica or Pantera. After he passed away, my stepdad listened to Dio, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Poison, and we always listened to Rob Zombie while playing video games together. My mom would basically listen to whatever, ranging from the rock radio station to country, which was fine growing up but now I just see it as lowest common denominator shit. She actually likes Nickelback. It's repulsive.

Anyways, my brother was the main influence on my tastes but the fatherly figures I've had in my life were also pretty important too. I had never really thought about that till now.

I highly doubt I will have a child one day, but if I do I will play him or her Beethoven, Bach, and Chopin in his first few months of being born and work my through some Opera and then by 12 introduce him to Deep Purple and Iron Maiden and then he'll discovered what a fucked taste his old man has in music. Or he'll find it fascinating and will take a liking to the occult and esoterics! Hopefully it'll be a he .

Mom likes 50's music and Gospel/Christian
Dad likes 60's-70's rock like The Doors,Pink Floyd,etc

My dad hadn't even heard of Dio before he (Dio, not my dad) died two years ago. Now, two years later, I sometimes come home to him listening to Dio and the first thing he always says is "Why did this guy have to go so early?". It nearly brings mantears to my eyes.

My dad is very much a product of the 70s. Deep Purple, Rainbow, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, ZZ Top, Van Halen, etc...

My mom WAS a product of the 80s, but has evolved into whatever sounds good to her. But she was into Scorpions, Ozzy, Mötley Crüe, Quiet Riot, etc...

I got into heavy music, Metallica, Iron Maiden etc... Then raided their cassette and cd collection getting into Van Halen and Black Sabbath mostly. And now here I am.

60s/early 70s rock.

Dad is big into The Who, CSNY, Doors, Rolling Stones, and too much Bob Dylan.

Mom had similar taste, plus stuff like Neil Diamond, and some early prog like Moody Blues and King Crimson.

Dio.

One of my earliest memories is of my father playing Bob Dylan. That's what started me off. :')

My mother listened to show-tunes and my father listened to classical. It was an excruciating experience for me as a child.

Classical music was excruciating?

I'm very appreciative of classical music now but then it was a death sentence. Kids in a fourth grade talent show were dressing as KISS and all I knew was the soundtrack to Camelot and Tchaikovsky. Holy crap was I ever made fun of. My friends were all listening to pop/rock radio and I was obsessing over John Williams' Star Wars soundtrack.

Yeah I can definitely see how that might have been painful. I nearly bought the soundtrack to the second Dark Rises though I thought maybe I should hear a few tracks off of it first before purchasing it.

Dylan himself got started off by Rabbie Burns. Ever read some of the Baird's stuff?

Dad listens to anything ranging from classic rock to jazz, blues, old country (as in country-western), and bluegrass. Mom likes 70's / 80's rock (The Police and The Eagles are her favorites), and when she's not listening to that, she'll listen to top 40 radio, which is interesting. Also Metallica's s/t is one of her favorite albums which is cool, but she doesn't listen to metal aside from that. The great thing about my parents though is that they're always up for listening to new music that's outside of their genre comfort zones, and they've never judged or patronized me over my love for the more extreme genres of metal.
