Hmm, I have listened to it a couple times now and it is not sitting well. It reminds me of Paid in Full, except that song had some dynamics that kept it interesting, even if it was pretty weak. This one is just.....yeah, thats about it.

Something tells me they had a producer that was heavily involved in the songwriting and arrangement early and they have gone away from taking much advice in that regard. I have no idea, but that is usually the circumstances. The song titles alone for about half of these would have resulted in me personally calling the label (you know, if I were the producer and the label hired me, which is usually how it goes, though not always like that these days) I would have A&R discuss with them why exactly the stuff in the past was well regarded and a song title such as "shitload of money" does not fit whatsoever into that.

This sort of thing often happens when foreigners who don't have the best grasp on English try to write songs that are lyrically current. It happens all the time.

When musicians are young, it's cool to write fantastical lyrics...you know, dragons, satan, unicorns, whatever. Cheesy stuff, for sure. When they mature, they start caring about real-life issues, like most of us, and their lyrics/song titles become a different kind of cheese because they're serious now.

I agree with this. Nice post. Some of these bands write extremely hard to grasp lyrics that are almost encoded for certain people who have experienced something similar first hand to understand. Since a lot of people know the album - Serenity's "Reduced To Nothingness" is like that for me. Personally, I think they get jaded that no one walks up to them and tells them exactly how personal and close those lyrics were for them. I think this results in laziness. Maybe it is just the fans. Most of the bands I listen to are charting the very same waters with much different vessels, that's the easy way to put it. I think they are very much aware of this but are puzzled why no one else seems to notice.

Nobody interested in this band anymore? At first I was WTF is this crap, but after 5-6 spins it is quite enjoyable. I' m not even a big fan of SA ( Ecliptica and Reckoning Night were really good and the rest of it is just meh ) I fully skipped the last two albums BTW ( not because of change of direction, I just lost interest in this kind of power metal ) so I cannot compare.
It's diverse, some songs are cool, some are bit repetitive and that boring single is probably the weakest track here. What says you?

I listened to the stream a bit and it interested me enough to purchase the album when I get a chance. SA used to be one of my favorite power metal bands but, like you, I think I just got over stuffed with that brand of metal and moved on. Maybe this will do something for me?

Just listening to it now and it's brilliant. They've brought the epic solos back!! Yaasssss.

They have lost me as to what sort of band they want to be with so many ideas going on. Going to save my judgement for now and keep persisitng with this, but so far it does seem to be lacking those really memorable tracks.

Couple of spins and I think it is on par with Reckoning Day, or perhaps just behind, but easily their best since then. It seems like Tony reined in his tendancy to throw paint at a wall just to see what sticks, and got back to writing memorable hooks without losing the artistic quality.

There is some filler (Alone In Heaven, The Day, Don't Be Mean) but there are also some moments of brilliance (both Wildfire's) and one song that is worth it's wait in gold for both awesomeness and sheer wtf'ness (Cinderblox).

Overall I would call this a nice return to form following two purely experimental albums, and I am back on the Sonata Arctica bus.

For me, this rivals 'Unia' for their worst to date.

This album isn't metal. It's pretentious sleaze rock.

Sure it is, except there is no sleaze on it.
