Yes, Blue Velvet works well too, but feels rather disgusting in some ways.

He's just not a director I'd say: "watch his stuff!", unlike say, Kieslowski.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001425/

He directed a bunch of stuff in the 80s into the mid-90s before dying young. 1989's 'Decalogue' was a miniseries for Polish TV. Ten parts, each very loosely based one of the Ten Commandments. He did the Three Colors Trilogy in the 90s, which featured a much higher budget done in post-Cold War France and got him international attention.

If you can tolerate cheap production, subtitles, and slow pace, I can't recommend The Decalogue enough. I should note: Stanley Kubrick said 'The Decalogue' was the only masterpiece he knew in his life.

I've been meaning to watch Blue Velvet for the longest time now! I rarely watch movies anymore, though, which is quite a shame.

Went to see it last night. It's not bad, gentle stoner comedy with few laughs but plenty of smiles. ***1/2

Funny Face

Singin in the Rain

the dialogue and dancing and music of these musicals made me really really happy. Also Audrey Hepburn as philosophy nerd bookstore clerk eeeeeeee. Also also I liked the attitude implicit in making most of the musical numbers in SitR irrelevant to the plot.

We just returned from seeing 'Avengers' which is simply the best superhero film I've seen. Joss Whedon is a fanboy's dream as he understands how to write a solid story and translate it to the screen. The guy is a genius.

Not sure about the best I've seen, but saw it yesterday and it was very good. Loved Loki ('mewling quim' is my new favourite phrase).

An underrated word that was sadly lost somewhere along the way... I keep hearing how Avengers is the best superhero movie ever, but I gotta disagree. Dark Knight was far superior.
Scarlett Johansen's performace had all the merit of an ear of corn. A plastic ear of corn, at that.

Yeah, the outfit.

But the woman has the reputation for being good at acting, which is still a mystery to me. Who started such nonsense?

What, seriously? Sorry, I had no idea. Here she's about on the same level as say, Jessica Alba. A somewhat decent actress but a... well, a hottie.

I think it is because most people remember her career beginning with "Lost in Translation". That movie was the perfect role for her because it basically consisted of her looking at the camera and being young and attractive while the dissatisfied older male character (Bill Murray) was basically left to fill in the fantastical details. He was watching her just like the audience was, and we all overestimated her.

I think being in Lost in Translation, The Man Who Wasn't There and a handful of Woody Allen movies gave her street cred.
