I'd say Opeth are taking the same risk that any other business would be if they changed what they do in ways that piss off some of their customers. The difference for musicians and artists is that maximizing profits usually isn't their primary goal.

This treasure of an album finally arrived in the mail today. What a tremendous and wonderful album this is. So much creativity, so much texture, so much passion--obviously quite different from what Opeth has done in the past--but the Opeth trademark sound is most definitely present and dominant. This album is at a least a 90 for me at the moment. I'm sure it will increase as it sinks in more.

I could be rude, so I will. This album is boring most of the time. No death vocals is fine. I don't care about that. I also don't care that it's over all pretty mellow. Unfortunately, there are, and have been, many technical, lengthy, subdued, and progressive rock bands out there. Opeth has just thrown themselves into that heap. Is it good? Well, sure it is. In a 70's progressive psychedelia way or something. It's artsy. I could listen to this while cleaning the house or while boning some snobby upper class vegetarian hippie chick or something. Good for a glass of wine, which is fine. What did he do like spend the summer with Anathema's girlfriend doing acid on the beach listening to Yes records? I'm in a very heavy mood lately so if I do come back to this later maybe I will like it more. Right now, I'm very angry at the world, so I just don't see myself spending much time with this.

Agreed! Angry at the world but also to Steven Wilson... the bastard who ruinded Opeth

You'll learn to ignore Karmakosmonaut.

That was uncalled for. Why the recent bone to pick with me? Did my rampant sarcasm injure you at some point?

Magician, sorry if I stepped on your toes, but that was a silly statement to make. In what way do you feel Steve Wilson is responsible for the new direction? I feel that the collaboration hasn't changed Opeth much - they made some heavy albums with mellotrons after Damnation and then suddenly shifted to the sound of Heritage. If I had to pinpoint the big result of their collaboration, I'd say it's Porcupine Tree having become much heavier in sound.

No, you tend to be quite an ass sometimes. It has gotten better over the years, though.

EDIT: I have bones to pick with you? No, not at all. The Septicflesh thread was just a genuine question, knowing your character and all. I was just curious to know. I haven't got a bone to pick with anyone, really!

Comments like this always fucking baffle me. This is Opeth, not Steve Hackett, Genesis, or King Crimson. And these aren't cover songs. The question should be: Is this good or bad? Enjoyable or not?

If it's good and enjoyable, fucking listen to it!

Do you not bang your girlfriend because, you know, you could just go jack off to pictures of Alyssa Milano?

that was not my intention to be elitist or a dick. What I was trying to say is that I don't really mind Opeth now. I was really satisfied with the way they used ot be, death metal with a progressive approach. Now, it's kind of pointless and I really DON'T like Heritage's weak try to be 70's and sounding vintage. It's not the way I like Opeth at all.

I've been giving this more attention recently and surprisingly I'm learning to greatly appreciate it. This really is a very good album; it's great that bands like Opeth are not afraid to take risks musically and push their boundaries a bit.

Mea culpa; Pale Communion really shows up the faults in Heritage. I'd score it 10-15 points less now, at least.
