It's a huge decision. Doing it half-cocked is not the manner in which to do it. You're choosing your entire career and hence life by what you get a degree in. Well, of course, you could always get a PhD in Literature and hop to the business world but stuff like getting a PhD in Philosophy requires deciding analytic or contemporary philosophy on top of finding a faculty that can provide you what you need in terms of forming a committee reflective of your interests. Or you could just do like other people and have your interests develop according to the faculty you get stuck with. Taking a year off won't kill you if you're being productive in terms of honing what you want to do with a dissertation and looking up departments that will be conducive to you doing that.

Out sailing. Storming like hell. Brief internet access. See you in hell. Nah, I kid, but winds are strong out here! Wish us luck!

Wishing I had a space to call my own back home. Walked into Red Emma's, a collective coffee shop/book store named after Emma Goldman, in Baltimore in order to get some Freud reading done. Instead, stumbled on an Occupy Baltimore meeting occupying the entire shop. They have plans to participate in Dismantle the Banks, which apparently will be seeking to have the govt take over Bank of America through bankruptcy laws. Also they are attempting to organize with labor in order to organize a large enough group of people to re-occupy a public space, whether that be a park, a public square, or quite possibly the poor areas of town where policing is less strict. Exciting!

Thanks for the advice. Except I don't want to think of it as a huge decision, that's scary!!

Thinking about it more, last semester when I would've started thinking about grad school a) I wasn't sure if I wanted to go, b) I didn't have an area of philosophy that I wanted to learn more about picked out, and c) it was the busiest semester of my undergrad. So I shouldn't feel too bad. Just gotta make sure I have a productive and hopefully financially successful year off from school. Got 4-5 books to read and gonna ask one of my teacher's for suggested readings in epistemology, 'cause it's fun and exciting but I only ever took a second year class in it.

My favorite epistemology books: Susan Hekman's The Material of Knowledge (overview of Wittgenstein, Foucault and Latour in terms of epistemology with a really awesome synthesis), Lynn Hankinson Nelson's Who Knows: From Quine to a Feminist Empiricism, and Linda Alcoff's article "Foucault as Epistemologist", Foucault's Power/Knowledge (interviews), and Horkheimer's Eclipse of Reason.

I think it's a bad dating move because it's better to see her less (especially if you have a good reason to not see her, ie a concert you want to go to) because then she wants to see you more. idk I might be wrong.

I kinda want to get a Colin Marston haircut. I've wanted to for a long time, actually.

Will probably do it tomorrow because worst case scenario I shave my head (I was thinking of doing that too!)

+1. That explained it better than I could when I initially tried. And yeah, it is scheming and I fucking hate being in that conniving situation but at the end of the day, I would love to see someone as much as I want but that gets me called needy and more often than not girls don't like that it seems. The ones who I end up dating, though, have been down for that but that has been rare so I shouldn't expect everyone to take an immediate liking to hang out that much.

Wanted to too after I saw an image of Dysrhythmia playing live but I've never grown my hair out long enough to do that. I feel like it would be best to commit to the length then the shave. Thoughts?

My hair's not nearly that long but I'm gonna go for it anyways. I think/hope it'll look like a variation on the trendy long top/short sides+back thing (pompadour?).

Never saw it as scheming but I see how I made it sound that way. I find my feelings for wanting to see someone suck, and that even if I've seen my gf way too much and we're getting on each other's nerves, I'll have a twinge of "let's hang out tomorrow!", so I tend to take almost every opportunity not to spend time with her. This sounds really weird when I put it into words but it mostly works.

So much for my luck, the girl that I've been talking to you since a year ago and she is very hot I might add has a BF. Although, I haven't seen her on regular basis and thus have not thought of her all that much (hence, just finding out that she has a BF from a close friend of mine) In the mean while, I talked to her today because I had to lend her my notes and we talked about half an hour which was really exciting. She's a very nice girl and everything but if I were to make a move on her by asking her out I would be violating my ethics by trying to break her up with her BF so I can date her instead. I'm not in the habit of breaking up or fucking with relationships. I feel we really clicked on lot of spots today which is pointless because she is already taken and as it seems it's quite serious. Even if I ask her out it would be a temporary high because I know where her destination is. All too bad! What can I do? Not a whole lot :lame:.

That's unfortunate but I admire your ethics. (I do the same thing!)

Erm, quite. We live in different cities as is, so this kind of thing is ridiculous. Plus, I'm going on the entirely reasonable basis that she wants to see me too...

I completely agree. I suck at finding other things to spend my time with to be honest when I really like someone. I'm so bad at that.

@DefiniteInfinity: Fuck other dudes. If she shows interest in you and you think you're a great guy then you owe it to her to have that experience of dating you. I may just be pompous but I genuinely think that I am better than most men and if a girl shows interest in me I take her up on that.
