Evanescence is not Metal but their music appeals to rock/hard rock/metal fans so it makes sense for it to be reviewed here.

Same goes for Alice in Chains and AC/DC, they are not metal but they easily crossover to metal fans.

When are you fuckers going to learn that it's not 1978 anymore? The term "metal" has evolved.

Evanescence is metal. Alice in Chains straddles the line of metal and rock. AC/DC is rock.

You're just being boneheaded here. They may straddle the metal line but they are not purely metal and definitely not in any major capacity. They blend rock, metal and pop. I'd say they are mostly rock then pop. If your definition of a metal band is any band that incorporates metal elements no matter if it's slightly or not than yeah ok it's metal....

The problem with people like you is that you can only tell us what isn't metal. You have no idea what constitutes "metal," and if you try to explain it you'll come off contradictory or silly, especially if you start talking about metal being a look and an attitude, etc. Nothing fits in that shiny little genre tag these days.

I you look at music, for instance, like a family tree, then you'd have metal at the very top, under which would be things like goth-metal, death metal, black metal, power metal, etc. There is no strictly "metal" genre anymore.

I understand that some people can't dig on people calling Evanescence a "metal" band, but it's an ambiguous term now, one that only signifies that a band falls under that umbrella. What kind of metal band they are is something entirely different.

Now your just being a know it all douche who thinks he knows me or what I know about music. I don't really need you to explain metal and it's sub genres. I'm well aware of them. If you'd know me you'd know that I'm in no way an elitist and that I do not mind calling a band "metal" even if it's unpopular (as your trying to point out). I listen to a variety of music and bands, such as Evanescence, that may be popular or not on theses boards and I couldn't care less.

Now since your all bent on insulting everybody that dare say different than you, fine by me I'll bow out to the almighty god of music

Now if I'd have to absolutely include Evanescence in metal family I'd probably shove it in the alternative metal category. But for me I consider it goth rock.

How the fuck did I insult you? Is my "people like you" comment really that offensive, dude? Come on. This is music discussion. Act accordingly.

I don't care if your opinion is different. Don't accuse me of getting all bent out of shape just because I disagree with you. It is you who has reacted that way, not me. I'm just having a discussion with you, dude.

Sorry but your comment totally came off as condescending. The tone and your "people like you" plus trying to "teach" me that metal has sub genres plus basically saying I'm ignorant :" you can only tell us what isn't metal. You have no idea what constitutes "metal," and if you try to explain it you'll come off contradictory or silly". I guess internet does that sometimes...

Well, I'm disagreeing with you so it is going to come off somewhat condescending if you look at it from a certain perspective (i.e. the Ken is a douche perspective).

The whole point I tried to make is that no one can tell anyone what "metal" is, only what it was. Yes, 30 years ago music styles were very distinct and bands fit easily within Metal and Rock as genres, but that no longer works today. The styles are too vastly different these days. So of course what was once a genre has now been splintered into dozens of sub-genres, leaving the old genre of Metal completely meaningless as such.

If you think Evanescence is goth-rock, I won't argue with that. They surely go there at times. But overall I think they're too heavy to sit fully under that Rock umbrella.

Does Evanescence themselves call their music metal?

I went to their website and there was not one mention of the word metal in their bio or anywhere else on the site.

But I did find this on another site:

"We're definitely a rock band, but the twist is that the band's music is epic, dramatic, dark rock.”
—Amy Lee about Evanescence's genre, 2003

From the horses mouth, so i guess we can finally close up this discussion now :P

I'd guess that back in 2003 she was pandering to the mainstream sentiments- you know, metal not being cool anymore and all that.

It's hilarious to log in and see that Evanescence and Amaranthe remain at the top of the album reviews thread.

I always amazed at how certain lads focus their entire energy on negativity. I think Evanescence is crap but I can't be bothered to join the same polemics with the same people all over again.

And, btw, PoG should be banned.

What's the point? creating a new account is fairly easy. Every forum needs a troll, it's fun.

Steve is well-informed if a bit rushed in his point of views and perspectives sometimes. I would never ban him. I think he should stay.
