Darkseed (Spellcraft, Give Me Light, Diving Into Darkness, Astral Adventures & Ultimate Darkness), Embraze are pretty good, Dying Tears, Grayscale, Frostburn, Sirenia as well

Typical gothic: Entwine, For My Pain, To/Die/For, Poisonblack, Charon, Visions Of Atlantis

Im quite new to gothic/dark metal, any recommendations on where i should start? ive listened to abit of Lacuna Coil, Atargatis, and Elis.
ive never actually found anything that completely slays...most of the stuff ive heard i would rate as 'ok' or 'interesting'.

oh and please dont say nightwish.

thnx.

If you like your Drak Metal depressive then try Agalloch The Mantle. If you like it more light-weighted then the new Sentenced (The Funeral Album) is a great one to start with.

If you want to know what "true" Gothic-METAL could sound like then try Paradise Lost's Gothic.

And of course I'm never getting tired to repeat it again and again:
Anathema, The Silent Enigma, and Timat, Wildhoney, are absolutely essential.

sorry dude, but Gothic is Paradise Lost's 2nd album... "Lost Paradise" was their first (1990) and it's awfully slow death metal... :? and i think the best goth album Paradise Lost did was One Second :P

Actually IMO the best female-fronted metal band is the Gathering. This is back in the days of Mandylion/Nightime Birds etc, when they were in fact a "metal" band. I think its very tough to beat these records.

I recently heard a track by a band called Darkwell. I actually really liked it, although it seemed a bit too poppy for many on this site. Does anyone else know them? Any info?

I don't know if there is anybody elese, but for sure not me. I only made some sort of an insider-joke, that you can't get w/o the background.
So, could you be so nice to keep me out of your fight?

There's some truth in this. Mandylion is definitely one of metal's most unique albums. Too bad it's almost forgotten nowadays, or at least that's my impression.

I think the fact that the Gathering moved so far away from metal means that people forget how well they played in that style. Certainly Anneke has one of the best voices in this genre anyway, more flexible than most, but also much subtler than most of the operatic types.

Yes, you're probably right. It's not necessarily the fact they strayed from metal that bothered me, but the fact that How to measure a planet and If_then_else were sort of boring, at least for me. But they made a pretty decent comeback with Souvenirs, which is very good without being metal. Actually, I think I could recomand it to the guy looking for something atmospheric and ambiental in the other thread. That is if he reads here, I'm to lazy to post twice.

If u want goth/dark with or without doom influence try:
Lacrimas Profundere (In Memorandum, Burning: A Wish)
Throes of a Down ( Quicksilver Clouds)
After Forever (Descipher)
Anathema (Alternative 4)
Divercia (Modus Operandi)
Epica (Any of the 2 albums)
Slumber (Fallout)
Rapture (Futile, Songs for the Withering)
Silentium (Altum)
The 3rd and the mortal (this one is more atmosheric try: Tears Laid in Earth)
Mar De Grises
Mist and the Morning Dew (only Demo from them right now)
Forest of Shadows (I prefer their old demos but Departure album is ok too)
