Mastodon is an interesting band, I struggle to get into them, but there's only about 3 songs on the new album that I like.

For me, Oblivion is still my fav Mastodon song

Hmmm I've warmed up to this a little bit more but I still don't really care for the direction they're headed in. The vocals and song structures are just too obviously aimed at mainstream radio. Still, it's impossible not to love a lot of the riffs and of course Brann Dailor is amazing as always, Mastodon are just too good at what they do I guess.

I have all of their albums, but right now this is the one I am enjoying the most. While it is definitely a calmer direction, I like the vibe that is going on in songs like Curl of the Burl and Black Tongue. Hard to compare it to the others when it is so different, but definitely a strong record.

Additionally, this is one that I can show to friends and family that might serve to bridge the gap to their other works, so that should be fun.

I still  a bit at everyone going MAINSTREAM RADIO MAINSTREAM MAINSTREAM MAINSTREAM. I mean, yeah it is more "mainstream" but have any of you listened to the radio lately? Mastodon is still, and I mean by far, much much much heavier than any rock that actually gets playtime on "mainstream" outlets. The heaviest band I've ever heard on the radio is Killswitch Engage, maybe Slipknot.

I might be biased because I can still enjoy Mastodon, even if they're being more mainstream. I dunno.

I really doubt that these guys went in writing this with the intention of getting a big hit, either. I think it's much more likely that they just wanted to make a fun album after the beast that was Crack the Skye.

This is settling in pretty comfortably for me as their 3rd best album, behind Crack the Skye and Leviathan.

Funniest thing I have read this year. Also the most ridiculous. Let me know when you hear Mastadon on the radio....

Just cause they're not getting mainstream radio play doesn't mean they're not getting softer and softer with each release.

New albums ok but not spectacular. I'm going to stick with Remission and Leviathan. This prog rock shit can go fuck off.

I have to echo the sentiments of everyone here who thinks this new album blows.

Remission and Leviathan are what made this band good and heck even Blood Mountain has its moments but CtS and this just fucking sucks and is boring as hell IMHO.

Mastodon kinda fell off my radar after I struggled to get to grips with Crack the Skye. I loved Blood Mountain though, it's my personal favourite of theirs.
