Well, metal is one of the many bastard sons of the anglo-american post-WWII pop culture...

Only according to your irrelevant opinion.

If you think that the stale world of 21st century Death Metal is some sort of leader in musical extremity then you're a bit behind the times.

That boat passed in 1988-95.

When did I say anything about modern death metal? You are the one pointing to the "masses" as your support, which is pandering to the lowest common denominator.

Now you've lost me. What do you mean by pointing to the "masses."

Also I had mentioned a whole heap of DM bands - hence I thought you were referring to DM.

By your arguments in favor of "classics" as metal albums that did well in the mainstream.

I think two tiers of classics, those within the mainstream and those only within the metal community, as Stefan suggested, is a fair system.

But you suggest that mainstream acceptance is a fundamental element of "classic" status, no?

You misunderstand me.

I was merely responding to the contention that classic albums with mainstream acceptance might not be that relevant to metal anymore. I think they are.

I also think that classics exist with Metal - albums that are classic in context of heavy metal evolution or are simply fucking awesome and generally accepted by all as such.

E.g. Repulsion's Horrified or Dark Angel's Darkness Descends are as classic as Metallica's Master of Puppets or Iron Maiden's The Number of the Beast in the context of the metal genre.

I've been pushing this line in the Classics section of the forum for some time.

Hence I am in complete agreement with Frenchie.

And I basically agree with him. We completely misunderstood each other then. Oh well, not the first time.

All is well now and you both agree with me... Isn't life wonderful?

Ho, I forgot about the almighty third category which started a debate in the thread about Conception: the Private Classics! Those are albums the one considering them a classic cannot live without but which mean shit to almost anybody else.
I know, for example, that I consider the first three King's X or both Big F albums like absolute classics. I know most people would disagree and I know, deep down, that my falling in love for them was circumstancial but I can't help it. You probably know the feeling.

Those albums should NEVER be published in the classics section even if it hurts whoever wrote the review.
